Post 24 Commander's Corner
After a wonderful meal provided by the Ladies Auxiliary, we were joined by guest from the Department of Maine to present a Blue Star Banner to Darla Sanford for her son Austin Sanford, currently serving in Afghanistan. The guests were National Executive Committeeman Alternate (NECA) Paul L’Heureux and his wife, Audrey, who works with Darla in Auburn. They were joined by Past National Vice Commander (PNVC) William "Chick" Ciciotte. It was a great ceremony and one very much deserving. Darla and her son are our newest members of the American Legion family at Post 24.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, the Dinner (Mexican), Laugh and Dance will be held at the American Legion. Get your tickets at the Post now before they are all gone.
The next meeting will be on the second Sunday, January 8, because the first Sunday is New Year's Day. On New Year's Day, there will be a brunch at 10 a.m. for members and guest for $10 all you can eat. During the meeting PNVC Chick talked about State of Maine Veterans Benefits, which is published by the Maine Veterans’ Service with Peter Ogden as the director. For more information on these benefits visit the website www.mainebvs.org.
Chick stressed the importance of the American Legion being advocates for veterans within our areas. “They do not have to be a member of the American Legion or any other service organization, just a veteran. It is important for us to get the information to the veterans within our areas.” NECA L’Heureux talked about public relations with the American Legion Post and the surrounding area, the revitalization of Legion Posts and their membership. “It’s important to keep things happening, new things happening to attract new members. You have to keep it interesting.”
