Support Finance Committee’s recommendation on Article 5
To the Editor:
As chairman of the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste Board, I would like to ask Rumford voters to support the Finance Committee’s recommendation on Article 5.
Eliminating trash and recycling pickup for the town would significantly increase the NORSW budget for future years. We have not had to increase the solid waste budget for the past eight years due mainly to revenues received for recyclable materials. If recyclables are not collected, these revenues would be greatly reduced. Last year these revenues amount to $150,133.71.
In addition, if individuals were to start bringing their own trash and recyclables down to the transfer station, the increased traffic would necessitate the hiring of additional crew at the transfer station to assure materials are properly disposed of and safety issues are addressed.
I would also worry about the health consequences of trash building up on sidewalks because many people do not have transportation, or unable to pay a private contractor to pick up their garbage.
I would be happy to discuss this issue in greater detail if you would like to call me at 364-7408 (day) or 369-0354 (evening).
Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste Board.
