So, Maine people are sheep?
To the Editor:
I was listening to the national news on the radio and I heard a very interesting statement -- "Maine is a kick the door open State" kick the door open state? What does that mean?
Apparently, it is common knowledge that when a group or cause wants to get their agenda passed or on the national radar for legislators, these groups will come to Maine and present the issue or cause to the Maine people and without fail we generally pass the issue through our communities and on to our legislators to be passed into law. What? They simply bring the issue to Maine and we pass it? Put simply, it seems we are either so incredibly enlightened here, or we are so incredibly uneducated on the things that effect our lives that the rest of the country uses us as a war ground to fight their battles.
This may make you angry, but I think it's the later, we are so uneducated about issues that we seem to pass it all. We pass every bond issue (bond means really big loan, by the way) we pass one law after another and rarely ever think about its consequences.
Now I haven't done the research to find all these issues that come here, but I would put good money on the fact that we have earned that reputation with good reason. Folks, we need to start using our heads more. We need to start using that good ol' Maine pragmatism that we were known for in the past and stop making all our decisions from our misplaced sense of ideology.
Let's start educating ourselves on the issues, no more jumping on the bandwagon, because the idea "sounds right and fair." Let's start making our own decisions and begin to take pride in our fine state and in our ability to Lead when others do not.
Let's show America that we make our own destiny!
