VFW Post needs your support
To the Editor:
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert Shand, Post 1641, Rumford need your help and support.
After WWII just about all Veterans came home and joined the V.F.W. and supported our objectives which are; fraternal, patriotic, historical, patriotic, historical, charitable, and educational; to preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members; to assist worthy comrades; to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead; and to assist their widows and orphans; to maintain true allegiance to the government of the United States of America, and fidelity to its Constitution and laws; to foster true patriotism; to maintain and extend the institutions of American Freedom; and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies. This is still our mission today.
The problem is that our membership has dropped from a high of 882 members to under 300 members with about 50 of those WWII veterans in their eighties, three of those are holding post officers positions in our Post because no one else will step forward to take the positions. Only 10 to 14 members come to our meetings.
Is this only generation that supports our objectives?
Eight years ago our Ladies Auxiliary disbanded due to non-participation of its members. We do not want this to happen to our VFW.
For us to survive or maintain as an Organization we must have your support and participation in our Post. Members of the Post need to, pay your dues early, come to our meetings, become an active member (volunteer for an officer’s position or committee member), and recruit new members.
Annual members be aware effective 1 January 2014 dues will be increased by $10 a year. If you pay your dues before January 1, 2014 then your dues will stay the same this year, $25.
Be proud that you are a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and thank all veterans for their service.
If you are not a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and if you are eligible please join (I know there are more than 300 Veterans in the area that are eligible to join the VFW and we need your support!) so please check with the VFW for eligible dates and Overseas Areas on Foreign Service to see if you are able to join the VFW.
