Proud to serve Rumford's wonderful library
To the Editor:
It was heartening to read a letter to the Times from the trustees of the Rumford Public Library acknowledging the Friends of the Library for their recent emergency purchase of a new refrigerator for the library. The Friends in turn would like to thank the owners of Stanley's for their help with this.
As treasurer of the Friends for the last three years I have been privileged to write sizable checks to buy things which benefit the library in a variety of ways. The Friends have funded a system to more securely archive the Rumford Falls Times, bought newer technology and software for use by the Head Librarian, scanners for the circulation desk, a display rack for the Children's Room and as mentioned earlier, a refrigerator for the kitchen which is used by staff and special events held in the Public Room.
How have the Friends managed to afford these gifts to RPL? In 2011 benefactors were especially generous to the Friends. We received numerous donations in memory of patrons who had experienced RPL in a special way and whose families suggested sending memorial gifts to the Friends.
Other donations were given in honor of certain individuals and some simply to acknowledge the importance of RPL itself. All gifts of this nature sent to "Friends of RPL" are greatly appreciated.
The Friends also add to the treasury by having an annual book sale. This year it will be held in June and we will be delighted to personally greet and thank our supporters at that event.
Finally, the Friends of Rumford Public Library have annual $10 membership dues. We invite anyone interested in joining the Friends to fill out a membership form. Forms are available at the circulation desk.
Whether you become a Friend just to give your financial support or to actively participate in the organization, you will be part of a group proud to serve Rumford's wonderful library.
