Hoping the town grants mill request
To the Editor:
I am writing in regard to the request for the reduction in the tax liability made by the Rumford mill.
I sincerely hope that the selectmen and town manager will have the wisdom to grant this. I fear that if the request is not acted upon favorably that mill management would be forced to make the decision to close the mill forever.
I fail to see how the town would not be adversely affected by that action. In my opinion, two million dollars tax payment is preferable to having our largest well-paying industry shut down with absolutely no further tax payments.
The Town of Rumford already has half of its home and businesses up for sale. Imagine what would happen to the town if there were 800 additional jobs lost.
Hopefully, town management will not be so shortsighted that they refuse to see what the ramifications of that action would be. The viability of the largest employer in the area affects everyone.
If the mill shuts its doors, the entire population of Rumford and the surrounding towns will be affected. Young people will be forced to leave the area and the remaining citizens will be seniors and welfare recipients.
