Save the paper mill; save Rumford
To the Editor:
A group of Rumford taxpayers have submitted a town ordinance proposal for review and approval by the Rumford voters.
This action by the Save Rumford citizen committee was necessitated by the inaction of the Rumford town officials after a formal notification by the Rumford Paper Mill of a financial emergency.
The Rumford Paper Mill must manage a significantly improved financial performance this year. Missing the corporation performance goals could shut down the plant. A plant closing would affect over 800 local employees. If the paper mill closes its doors, Rumford’s fragile economy will suffer a fatal blow.
We have identified the situation as a survival issue requiring immediate attention. The town ordinance, if approved, will limit spending for the Rumford municipality. The spending cap will enable the town to provide $1,100,000 tax relief to the Rumford Paper Mill to assist the mill management in their quest to sustain their operation. The paper mill management and the local labor union must develop cost avoidance measures to compliment the property tax relief accorded by the new ordinance.
On Tuesday evening, the Rumford officials will review the spending cap ordinance. If they accept the ordinance and place it on the
Rumford referendum election ballot, the voters will have the final say regarding our dual intention to help save the paper mill and to lower the property taxes for all Rumford taxpayers.
