Hungry Kingdom to be operating again
To the Editor:
Good news on the Hungry Kingdom front: the program will be operating again at Andover Elementary School for the new academic year beginning this fall.
As you know, the Hungry Kingdom program assures that every student in Andover Elementary School get breakfast, lunch, and a snack milk during the school day. There’s a lot of research, buttressed by just plain common sense, that kids learn better when they are not hungry. Hungry Kingdom assures that each child gets those meals regardless of economic circumstances and is treated the same as every other student in our school.
In fact, Andover’s Hungry Kingdom program has been so successful over the past half-dozen years that Yankee Magazine is planning a feature on it for its November/December issue. Hopefully, that kind of broad publicity will let it be a model for other communities in Maine -- and beyond.
The program has received continuing support from Andover residents to make it a reality each year, and we’re again asking you to lend your own financial support to this important work for our Andover kids.
Please send your tax-deductible contributions to the Hungry Kingdom Fund at the Andover First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 249, Andover, ME 04216 by mailing your contributions payable to “Andover First Congregational Church,” noting on the memo line “Hungry Kingdom Fund.”
