Support RSU 10 budget
To the Editor:
RSU 10 created a 2013-14-school budget proposal of $36,181,848 that was sent to each community for approval by the voters.
Despite significant cuts (through reduction of personnel, technology, maintenance, and others), this budget represented an increase of $1,036,780 or (2.95%) over the previous year. The voters rejected this budget proposal at the polls.
RSU 10 has created a new budget proposal that has taken into consideration several developments since the original budget vote.
1. The Maine Department of Education (MDOE) informed RSU 10 that it is now responsible for a new, increased contribution of $468,058 to the Maine Public Employees Retirement System (MEPERS) based on action by the Governor and Maine Legislature.
2. Concurrently, the MDOE increased the state subsidy to RSU 10 by $345,762. The difference between the increased retirement obligation and the increased state subsidy was $122,296.
3. The administrators of RSU 10 met on July 8, 2013 to identify additional cuts to offset the $122,296. The administrators identified $128,500 in new cuts to bring in a new budget proposal of $36,521,406. These new cuts include: reduction in stipend positions, reduction in summer school funding, and reduction in personnel salaries and wages.
4. This new budget of $36,521,406 was presented to the RSU 10 School Board on the evening of July 8, 2013. They approved this budget to send to the voters for a second public vote.
The budget being put forward by the RSU 10 School Board represents what they believe is the financial commitment needed to provide an adequate education for all students of RSU 10. The communities of RSU 10 have a shared future-all children of the many communities of this school district will learn and grow together. I urge all citizens to support RSU 10 in its work and participate in the budget process.
The times and dates for the new budget process are: Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., Informational meeting, Buckfield Junior/Senior High School; Thursday, 6:30 p.m., Budget validation meeting, Mtn. Valley High School, Rumford; Tuesday -- Referendum vote on proposed budget.
