Post 24 Commander's Corner
The mid-winter conference held January 20-22 at the Fireside Inn & Suites in Auburn was attended this year by myself, Ed Roach, Jr., Fred Milligan and Marcel Martineau.
The topics were varied and very informative. We were briefed that the VA will be paperless by the year 2013 and everything will be conducted on-line. We were briefed on post budgeting and general licensing, post management and finance duties, parliamentary procedure for running orderly meetings, post operations and membership along with post Americanism programs.
We were informed that at the current time the Department of Maine is at 85 percent membership and is 12th in the nation. That sounds good, but at this time last year we had over 600 members less. Of course, deaths do play a big part in that, but renewal of membership remains a big problem for all posts within the Department of Maine. We talked about how using Facebook could be used as a membership tool, whether it is retention or new members, or to keep everyone informed. Post history and record retention along with post officer roles brought good discussion from the floor.
As of Jan. 1, the Legionnaire Insurance Trust Program changed the accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) benefits of $1000 at no cost to you. As a Legionnaire, you’re eligible for the following benefits: $1000 no cost to you AD&D protection anytime; $5,000 no cost to you AD&D protection if you are traveling on official Legion business. If you are currently enrolled in the program you are automatically covered. If you are unsure if you have the coverage, call 1-800-235-6943, you will need to have your membership number. This coverage ends on August 31, 2016. If you want to enroll the applications are at the Post.
Post Adjutant duties and the DMS better known in Maine as Post 178 the Post on paper and the on-line renewals were discussed.
The following announced their candidacy and intend to seek election to the department office indicated at the upcoming annual convention in June at the Bangor Civic Center: Kenneth Boucher, Livermore Falls Post 10 – Department Commander; John Hargreaves, Richmond Post 132 – 1st Vice Commander; Richard Graves, Milo Post 41 – 2nd Vice Commander; Charles Foss, Dover-Foxcroft Post 29 – American Officer; Ronald Caron, Sabattus Post 135 – American Officer; Tom Adkins, Stockton Post 157 – Historian; John Weatherby, Rockland Post 1 – Sergeant – At- Arms; Paul L’Heureux, Auburn Post 143 – National Executive Committeeman; Andy Olson, Stockholm Post 136 – National Executive Committeeman Alternate; Brenda Dearborn, Richmond Post 132 – National Executive Committeeman Alternate.
The Four Chaplains ceremony was a huge success once again. Post 24 Chaplain Marcel Martineau provided us with a wonderful program. Letters were sent out from the Post to Legion members of Post 178 that reside in the area, inviting them to join us at our monthly meeting. Post 178 is a Post on paper. It is the Post you become a member of when you join the Legion through the mail. Hopefully the ones that attended transfer to a local Post and support the Legion Programs within the River Valley area.
The Post 24 Boys State Chairman, Fred Milligan has sent out solicitation letters to area merchants in hopes to sponsor or co-sponsor a Boy State Delegate. Every little bit helps. Last year we were able to send six boys from this area to Boy State. Our membership is currently at 90 percent with 51 members that have not paid their 2012 dues. Check your membership card if it does not say 2012 on it then you are at risk of losing your benefits. If you have any questions about your membership call the Post at 369-9053 and someone should be able to help you.
For those that would like to step up and take on the responsibilities of a Post Officer please let Dane Curato know as he is chairman of the nomination committee. The next district meeting is Feb. 21 at Dixfield, Post 100 at 7 p.m., nomination will be held for district officers. March is the month for officer nomination for the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and the Sons of American Legion. All groups are in need of people to step up and accept an officers position as a lot of positions will be vacated. We do not want the Post to go downhill after all the hard work of the previous officers.
Next monthly meeting will be held on March 4 with the meal at 5 p.m. and the meeting at 6. Hope to see you there and keep those membership dues coming in.
