Take control of your taxes
To the Editor:
Another budget meeting in Mexico and it was pretty much the same as usual.
The selectmen accepted every amount presented and voted unanimously on all the figures to accept them.
The budget committee dd take $50,000 from police and $30,00 from the rec department. This does not amount to much as the voters never get a chance to vote on budget committee's figures.
As concerned voters, the only thing you can do is compare the selectmen's figures with the budget committee numbers and if the budget committee is lower, vote "no" on the selectmen's figure and they will have to come back with a lower number. Your vote, your money, you have all the power.
Much discussion was held on the rec department. The rec programs are pretty much self-supporting but it is the cost of keeping the building open that is killing the taxpayers. We will be asked to approve $109,973 for the recreation department. The rec department took in about $38,000 from rents, fees, etc. to run their programs (up to March 30). This is enough for program but not enough for salaries, oil, water, sewer, garbage, phone, etc.
I would strongly suggest closing the building. Most all sports offered take place at the rec park except basketball, which could be run out of one of our many schools.
Also, there would be no more roller skating. Well, we must sacrifice something. Again, your money -- your choice.
Last year, the rec department asked for $144,001 and received $109,842. They managed just fine.
To get this reduction, one older lady made a stand and along with the Mexico taxpayers, made the cut happen. Just think if all of Mexico's older, mature senior citizens made a stand together on all articles and said "no," there would be no stopping us!
Take control of your taxes.
Update -- at the next budget meeting, it was voted to put $30,000 back into recreation.
