Support of an entire county
To the Editor:
On behalf of the Oxford County Master Gardeners and the Maine Harvest for Hunger program, we would like to thank the River Valley for their generous support of the inaugural “A Taste of History - Bean Hole Bean Supper.”
The proceeds will allow us to continue to grow and harvest fresh fruit and vegetables for those in need in Oxford County and to start a fund for long-term improvements such as additional refrigeration and fencing.
Not only did we want to raise money to continue the work that we do, but also raise awareness of the epidemic that is dubbed “food insecurity.” Oxford County is no exception and undoubtedly could be the epitome of such a label.
The goals of Maine Harvest for Hunger are to not only put the food in the hands of those that need it, but to offer them an opportunity to learn what healthy nutrition is in hopes that they can make healthy decisions when it comes to their lifestyle.
With all of that said, we have special heartfelt thanks for Eric and Ciara Giroux, representing the Rumford Firemen’s Relief Association, without them there would not have been beans and we thank them for all the input that they offered with regard to the entire event.
Those who also deserve many thanks (in no specific order) are:
Mike Mills and the Rumford Parks Department;
Dale Roberts, Arthur Boivin, Gerry Boivin and Gary Wentzell for their expertise and opinions about the recipe;
Bethel Fire Department for the sea of folding chairs;
Gould Academy for loaning us tables;
St. Barnabas Church for the mountain of pies and breads as well as the backup beans we didn’t need;
Jeanne LaPointe for awesome cole slaw;
The Rumford Extension Homemakers for all of their fabulous baking;
The Maine Highland Fiddlers for a wonderful afternoon of fiddling and dancing;
Master Gardeners by the millions who manned the bean pits from first shovel to the last truckload of equipment that was packed up on Saturday.
Without the support of an entire county, this event would never have come to fruition. We all hope that you are still jazzed up about this next summer as we plan to do it bigger and better for 2012!
