Dismay at Cougar football game
To the Editor:
I would like to express my dismay and utter disappointment in the event that occurred on Friday, Oct. 26.
Immediately following the football game at Dirigo High School, our boys took part in a sacred tradition of walking across the field for a final time as a family. It is considered by the team, fans and parents a bittersweet, proud and solemn moment.
The Old Orchard Beach team and coaches chose this moment to exit the field by walking across the field in front of our boys. It was beyond rude and disrespectful. However, it was made worse by you, Dr. Ward, by allowing it to happen. Dr. Ward, you stood there, you watched and listened to us, the parent, plead with their team to get off the field. You did nothing.
You watched as we, the parents, were mocked and had disgusting gestures aimed at us by the OOB team. You did nothing still. You were then asked to intervene. You were asked to go and tell the OOB team they were being rude and disrespectful. At this request, you told me to relex and then went on to say there was nothing to be done.
Dr. Ward, it appalls me that you were more concerned with my tenor and decibal level and less concerned about our boys and their right to have this special time. In my opinion, sir, you should not worry so much about appearances and just for once, do what is right for our team, for the parents and for the school. By this inaction by you, we now have a very negative opinion of you.
You owe our boys, the fans and the parents, especially the senior parents who will never have this opportunity again, a huge apology.
I do realize that an apology is not likely to come. Your lack of understanding of what is truly important to the families of Dirigo is clearly evident. Your actions or lack thereof is unforgiveable.
I sincerely hope you will consider what is meaningful to DHS in the future so the underclassment and the people who support them do not have to experience this level of disappointment. Please try to remember that you cannot unring a bell.
