Support the arts

To the Editor:

On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Kennebec Valley Music Educators Association presented their annual concert, with both junior and senior choruses and bands at Waterville High School.

An overflowing crowd of proud parents, relatives and friends watched the student perform a range of music, each group working under a conductor they had met just the day before, though these kids were certainly well prepared by their respective music teachers in our local schools.

Dirigo and Mountain Valley were well represented by outstanding chorus and band members. They brought their skill, love of music and practice, proved their ability through an audition, and contributed strongly to the final performance.

Their knowledge of reading music, learning an instrument, including voice, and performing comes greatly from the programs we support in our schools.

As the budget talks appear ahead, one hopes that the accomplishments of these students in their areas of excellence will be noted, and that the Arts, in whatever form they take, will be treated not as frills in our educational system, but a core aspect of learning.
