Thanks for making hockey weekend a success

To the Editor:

Last weekend was our third annual ‘Cormier Classic’ hockey weekend. It was a huge success thanks to the Rumford Parks Department and to all the players. My son and I have been arranging this each year, the weekend after New Year's, and it has seemed to work out great.

I communicated with Mike Mills throughout the week and, although he was skeptical of the ice conditions, assured me they would do everything they could to make it happen. On top of that, the guys at the warming hut agreed to stay late both Friday and Saturday for us so that we could run games from 7-9 p.m.

I felt like they went the extra mile to make this happen for us and I’m grateful. They could have ‘punched in and out’ as usual but they didn’t. Thanks Rumford Parks Department.

With 20 people showing up the first night and about 35 the second, the games were ‘on.’ I brought a goalie with me from New Hampshire, and there was a Rumford net minder at the other end.

We picked teams at random and divided light and dark jerseys for teams. Friday Night Lights prevailed, winning the scrimmage by 10-8 (it wasn’t the goalie's fault; our defense was terrible!).

What a blast. It’s a great time to visit family and friends in Rumford. Let’s do it again next year, God willing.
