  • State parks offer New Year’s fun with four first-day hikes

    REGION -- New Year’s revelers will get the chance this year to welcome in 2012 in a new way, with four guided “First Day Hikes” sponsored by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL), under the Maine Department of Conservation.

    Maine state parks are joining a nationwide initiative among all 50 states to offer “First Day Hikes” as way for individuals and families to connect with great outdoor fun and to create special, holiday memories. The Jan. 1 hikes mark the first time all U.S. state park systems have joined together to sponsor the event.

  • Every Fifteen Minutes

    RUMFORD -- "We're trying to change the culture of drinking and making bad decisions; keeping the community safe."

    Those were the words of Rumford Police Sgt. Tracey Higley. Higley, along with Chief Stacy Carter and Mountain Valley High School Asst. Principal Chris Decker addressed the Board of Selectmen here on Dec. 15 about a nationwide community program they're introducing locally called Every Fifteen Minutes.

  • Gawler Family to perform at Skye

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present The Gawler Family at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday December 28, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday December 29.

    Curtain at Skye is 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. A Pre-show jam session at Skye will start 1 hour prior to curtain. A community Barnraisers' supper will be held from 5-7 p.m. in Unity. A brief Contra Dance will be held at both venues at the close of the concert.
