Oxford casino manager named, more hires coming
Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amOXFORD — The local casino announced Thursday the hiring of its vice president and general manager, Jack Sours.
Sours, 45, has been working in casinos since 1999, when he was hired as a financial analyst for Isle of Capri Casino in Colorado, according to his online profile. By the end of 2005, he'd move up to general manager. In January 2009, he moved east to run the Mountaineer Casino Racetrack in West Virginia, where he worked until March 2011.
Broughton joins Dixfield force
Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amDIXFIELD- Dustin Broughton, a 2001 graduate of Mountain Valley High School has been hired as a full-time patrolman under the supervision of Chief Richard Pickett.
Broughton attended the Maine Criminal Justice Academy during the second semester of his senior year at Husson University, where he majored in Criminal Justice. “I hope to one day specialize in counter terrorism and become a special agent or a private contractor,” noted Broughton. “Time will tell.”
Conservation photo contest
Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amREGION -- The Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District is looking for your best conservation photo to grace the cover of this year's annual report.
The photo must fall under the category of conservation, but many any one of the following: agriculture, forestry, or soil and water.
One winner will be selected. First prize will be an agricultural package of great items provide by Aubuchon Hardware, Paris Farmers Union and Rosebeck Farm.
Three honorable mention winners will also be selected, but will not received prizes.

Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amDO NOT DISTURB- The Bat Cave at the base of White Cap Mountain and located on Tom Puiia's property has been studied over the last few years for bats with the White Nose Syndrome. While Puiia doesn't mind at all that adventurers are checking out the cave, biologist, Dave Yates, highly advises NOT to disturb the bats' hibernation. This is what they believe is part of the cause of the White Nose Syndrome, the bats not being able to go back to hibernation once disturbed, resulting in nearly an 80-percent drop in population in the last five years.
Aerial ladder truck needs repairs
Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amRUMFORD -- In an emergency session Thursday, the Board of Selectmen authorized the expenditure of up to $11,000 for repairs to the 1990 E1 aerial ladder truck. Those funds will come out of the fire department's operating budget.
Fire Chief Bob Chase said the urgent repairs are needed to rectify safety issues due to rapid deterioration of gears associated with the aerial's turntable, which allows it to rotate 360 degrees.

Positions set for emergency management agency
Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amPARIS — Oxford County has updated roles in the county Emergency Management Agency in a reorganization of the department.
The office manager position has been changed to deputy director, clarifying that the person is able to take over when the director is unavailable.
The department now has a director, deputy director, administrative assistant and planner.

37th Annual Ride-In is February 5
Jan 27, 2012 12:00 amRUMFORD- The Hope Association is preparing for its' annual ride-in on Feburary 5, held every year since 1974, this event brings area snowmobilers together with participants to raise money and more importantly, offers participants a chance to enjoy the outdoors in a unique way. Thanks to the generosity of local snowmobilers, the community, volunteers and the participants themselves this event has raised over $270,000 since it began.
