Join in as maple producers around the state celebrate Maine Maple Sunday and open the doors of their sugarhouses for the public to join them in this rite of spring. Here's a chance to see firsthand how 40 gallons of maple sap are turned into just one gallon of golden delight you pour over hot pancakes or ice cream.
River Valley coalition seeks data on drug use
Mar 22, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition is seeking data from area residents in order to get a grant to combat drug use.
RVHCC staff will conducting one-on-one interviews, Patty Duguay, coalition executive director, said in a news release. The interviewees are invited to share their thoughts, opinions and experiences to the extent that they feel comfortable, she said.

Search committee taking shape
Mar 22, 2013 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- Members of the RSU 10 board met with Supt. Tom Ward Monday night to establish a six-member superintendent search committee.
On Wednesday, the committee will meet to select the members of the school district and community who will serve on the interview committee. The search committee will also set dates for public informational meetings to receive input from staff and the public on the characteristics and attributes they would like to see in a new superintendent.
Tour to Costa Rica ok'd
Mar 15, 2013 12:00 amMEXICO -- A service learning tour to Costa Rica in April 2014 was approved by the RSU 10 Board of Directors at their meeting on Feb. 25.
The trip is being organized by Buckfield teachers Zachary and Maria Reinstein, who were present to explain the event.
They said the nine-day tour is open to the entire RSU, but restricted to ages 12 and up. Adults will act as chaperones. There will be a minimum of 12 people, but no more than 25.
Hebert authors work injury book
Mar 15, 2013 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- Lauren Hebert, DPT, of SmartCare Physical Therapy in Dixfield has been selected by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to author a monograph book on “Work Injury Prevention and Ergonomics.”
The Orthopedics Section of the APTA selected Dr. Hebert to author this monograph as a graduate study guide for physical therapists focusing on workplace musculo-skeletal disorders such as upper extremity overuse tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and lower back problems. The final text is to be finished by this spring.
Free trial day offered at Black Mountain
Mar 15, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- In an effort to promote the Chisholm Ski Club Alpine Race Program, a free trial day is being offered this Sunday. A full day of on-snow training will be free (with the purchase of a $15 lift ticket) for anyone ages 8-18 who is interested in the program but would like to see what it entails before joining.
Possible plan for Rumford's future

The answer is not clear, but the path to get there could well be in the town's comprehensive plan, to be voted on by citizens in June.
On March 5, members of the Comprehensive Plan Update Committee presented to selectmen what they have been working on over the past 18 months.
Kevin Saisi, chairman of the Comprehensive Plan Update Committee, said, "If people approve this, then this is what people would like to see happen."
