Student reps to be part of RSU 10 board
Oct 07, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Members of the Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 board approved a policy on Sept. 26 to allow up to three high school students to become non-voting members.
The unanimous action for students with a serious interest in civics will also allow them to earn a quarter credit for each semester served.
Board Vice Chair Bruce Ross said he wants a student representative from each of the three high schools.
“But if one region does not have an interested student, (that seat) would be open to others. We want representatives from each school.”
Easement, property line at issue
Oct 07, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- At the selectmen's meeting on Sept. 27, Town Manager John Madigan reported on easement and property lines for the end of Backkingdom Road, where construction has been ongoing for the dead-end portion of the road, including building a new turnaround for town plows and school buses.
The concern is where the town road ended and property belonging to Albert Aniel began. For years, the town had been using Aniel's property as a turnaround and plowing up into his driveway in the winter.
$189,617 grant for police department
Oct 07, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD- Just in time for Domestic Violence Awareness month, Chief Richard Pickett received word last week that his department has been awarded a three-year grant in the amount of $189,617 to hire a full-time officer to deal strictly with domestic violence cases.
Your voice is safe with purple
Oct 07, 2011 12:00 amOXFORD COUNTY- If you were anywhere in the vicinity of Congress Street in Rumford or Market Square in Norway on Monday, you most likely noticed that many of the windows were decorated in purple.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Safe Voices, along with their partners at the Oxford County Domestic Violence Task Force, got the word out that they were looking to see windows decorated in purple for the month and for community members to dress in purple on October 3.

Executive job openings announced at Oxford casino
Sep 30, 2011 12:00 amOXFORD — The Las Vegas casino hired to run one under construction in Oxford posted eight management-level positions Wednesday, most of them requiring experience at gambling businesses.
Silverton Casino President Craig Cavileer said the eight will make up the casino's “executive team,” which will consist of a director of finance, director of food and beverage, director of gaming operations, director of information and technology, director of marketing, director of surveillance, facilities manager and human resources manager.
Weston honored by Rumford Historical Society

Following the meal, the guest speaker was longtime historical society member Jean Hersey, who spoke about the history of the Rumford History Society, which is now serving their 50th year.
Mrs. B's raffle supports Peru Rec
Sep 30, 2011 12:00 amPERU- Carol Bernard, owner of Mrs. B's on Main Street has been a member of the small community for a little more than four years now and decided a few months back that she wanted to help raise money for the concessions/bathroom building that Peru Rec has decided to place near the town ball fields.
“The community has always supported me,” noted Bernard. “I wanted to show my appreciation and give back in a way that I was able to.”
