  • Lithuanian picnic held in Rumford

    RUMFORD -- At the turn of the 20th century, there was no work to be found in Europe. In Lithuania, a number of people decided to flee to the "Land of Opportunity" in America.

    One of the large group came to Rumford as the mill was being constructed.

    On Saturday, people of Lithuania descent gathered from all over the state for a Lithuanian picnic held in the lodge at Black Mountain.

  • Premier Celtic event on tap

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present The Tartan Terrors at Lakeside Theater in Rangeley on Tuesday, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, August 31, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, September 1st.

    Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Lakeside and Skye; 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at Skye and Unity. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.

  • Helicopter assisting power line upgrade

    REGION -- From now through early October, a helicopter line-construction company will be flying just above the tree-top level to help build Central Maine Power's new upgraded power line between Roxbury and Rumford.

    AIR2 of Timonium, MD is working with the Electrical Line Utility Group of Lewiston-based electrical contractor E.S. Boulos, according to an E.S. Boulos letter sent recently to residents along the eight-mile-long corridor.

    AIR2's McDonnell Douglas 500 helicopter is like a small Bell Jet Ranger helicopter, Adam Miller, the ESB project engineer, stated by email.

  • Weighted grades proposal approved

    DIXFIELD -- With the intent of encouraging students to enroll in the most rigorous classes, the Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 board voted unanimously on Aug. 15 to place the same weight on all grades earned by high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement and college credit, accelerated, advanced or honors classes.

    Dirigo High School Principal Mike Poulin said this was not an issue for Mountain Valley and Buckfield high school, but it was at Dirigo. "Courses not waited last year at Dirigo will be reweighted."

  • Heart Walk Lifestyle Change nominations accepted

    RUMFORD -- The Rumford Heart Walk organizing committee is now accepting nominations for the 2011 American Heart Association Lifestyle Change Award until Monday, September 12. If you know a French fry freak who has changed their diet to a more heart-healthy one or a couch potato who is now on the exercise bandwagon, consider nominating them to receive the Lifestyle Change Award at this year’s Heart Walk on September 18th at Hosmer Field.

  • Moulton sentenced to 40 years for murders

    PARIS — Richard A. Moulton, Jr. was sentenced to 40 years in prison Monday for his role in the 2009 murders of Victor Reed Sheldon and Roger Leroy Day, Jr.

    The sentence handed down in Oxford County Superior Court was the maximum allowed under an agreement last November in which Moulton pleaded guilty and would testify against others involved in the shooting deaths. His defense attorney, Ron Hoffman, argued for a 25-year sentence.

  • Democrats' annual barbeque event

    BRYANT POND -- Congressman Mike Michaud will be the guest of honor at the Oxford County Democrats Annual Barbeque at the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Leadership Center on Lake Christopher in Bryant Pond.

    The event will be held on Sunday, starting at 4:30.

    Director Mary Erin Casale are among the party leaders who are planning to attend.
