Now that the larger pieces are moving in, they take specialized trailers to move them. Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amOctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, here are some sobering statistics:
There were 429 domestic violence complaints lodged in Oxford county in 2010, up from 325 in 2009.
Safe Voices, the local domestic violence agency, provided services to 432 individuals in Oxford County, for 2010 – up from 364 the previous year.
As of July 28th, of the 17 homicides committed in Maine this year, nine were domestic violence related.
Nate Leipzig Close-up Magic Contest
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- The International Brotherhood of Magician's Ring 362 will hold the 2011 Nate Leipzig Close-up Magic Contest at 4 p.m. Sunday at 49 Frankin, Maine's Capital of Magic.
Contestants will have ten minutes to perform close-up magic before moving to the next station. Audience members will remain at each station as magicians rotate through each group. It is anticipated that contestants will perform their close-up acts for four or more groups, but no more than six.

Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amTalk about community involvement and generosity! Nicols Brothers Logging, Inc. lends a bridge to the Town of Rumford after the wrath of Irene! As I understand it, there would have been quite a wait for the families in the Swain Road area and beyond before they would have been able to use that part of the road. This affected not only the families in the proximity but also school buses, emergency vehicles, commuters, workers, etc. on a daily basis. Thanks to Jim and Carlene for their quick thinking and caring about the community.
Oxford County still examining Irene damage
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amANDOVER NORTH SURPLUS -- The extent of damage from Tropical Storm Irene is still being seen as Oxford County surveys destruction in the unorganized territories.
County Administrator Scott Cole said East B Hill Road, which connects Andover and Upton, is “severely damaged” and that part of the travel lane washed out as a result of heavy rain on Aug. 28 into the next day.

T-Acadie to perform at Skye
Sep 16, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present T-Acadie at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday.
Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye, and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at Skye and Unity. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.
