  • Rotary plans Oktoberfest on October 15th

    RUMFORD -- Tables are still available for the Oktoberfest sponsored by the Rumford Area Rotary, to be held on Saturday, October 15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hope Association Adult Activity Center (the former armory building) on Lincoln Avenue.

    Crafters, bakers and other groups and individuals will be able to set up on Friday, October 14, from 3 to 5 p.m. and at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event.

  • Hospital memorial bench dedicated

    RUMFORD -- The family of Yvonne Turbide Campbell recently gathered at Rumford Hospital to dedicate the granite bench that family and friends purchased to memorialize Campbell who served the community as a registered nurse at the hospital for 45 years.

    Campbell’s son, Steven, led the group in remembering her by talking about what made them grateful to have had her in their lives and sprinkling holy water on the bench.

  • A legacy of love, longevity

    DIXFIELD- September 1 marked the 70th wedding anniversary of Henry and Elaine Thebarge, something many of us can only dream about. For this couple and their family, it was a time that was made memorable through a family party with more than 60 members in attendance, including the newest addition, two-month-old, great-great granddaughter, Molly.

    It all began when Henry was just 16 and Elaine was 14; they met at a basket party in Madison.

  • Monsta featured at Moose Alley

    RANGELEY -- The boys from Monsta will be lighting up the stage at Moose Alley in downtown Rangeley this Friday.

    The rock band Monsta is a high-energy, five-piece band that has been gaining popularity in western Maine. Monsta formed in Rumford in December 2008 from seasoned local musicians who love to rock out to classic music from the 80's, 90's and today.

    Lead singer, Dan-O McDonald belts out vocals from artists such as Bob Segar, CCR, and Sublime, yet his own distinct personality shines in each rendition.

  • Charter change proposed

    RUMFORD -- For a number of reasons, selectmen want the option to appoint a town attorney who don't necessarily live in Rumford. However, it will take voter approval of a proposed change in November to make that possible.

    Last month, selectmen Jeremy Volkernick and Jolene Lovejoy said they wanted an attorney experienced with Maine municipalities. Further, they said they also wanted an attorney who specializes in tax increment financing for a more cost-effective approach.

  • Kids Cancer Walk

    RUMFORD -- Are you interested in helping a child with cancer?

    If so, call Sandee Welch at 364-2548/418-9650 to sign up for the Maine Children's Cancer Walk (MCCP), taking place on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Hosmer Field Complez.

    Sign up is 8-9 a.m., followed by the walk.

  • Dr. Cohen mentoring young dentists

    RUMFORD -- When you've practiced a vocation long enough, the opportunity to teach what you've learned can be very appealing.

    Such is the case with Dr. Jerrold Cohen, who came out of retirement a month ago to share his knowledge with three new dentists with Community Dental.

    Dr. Cohen, who had been retired for about a year after practicing dentistry in Mexico for over 40 years, says he is excited for the role, which requires his services for about a half-day per week at Community Dental offices in Rumford, Farmington and Lewiston.

    REGION -- USW Local 900, the Labor Union, which represents most of the hourly workers in the NewPage Paper Mill in Rumford, is pleased to announce that the Union scholarship program is presenting 30 local students with scholarship to help them further their education in the 2011-12 school year.
