Budget cuts force reduced public hours
Aug 12, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- Effective August 15, the Social Security offices in Maine will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. -– a reduction of 30 minutes each weekday.
While agency employees will continue to work their regular hours, this shorter public window will allow them to complete face-to-face service with the visiting public without incurring the cost of overtime.
Lochness monster, castle in Rumford's future?
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- If a longtime resident of Strathglass Park realizes his dream, the lochness monster and a Scottish castle will join a palladium in the center of the park on a 1.5-acre parcel of land known as "The Pines."
Gary Morrison, who moved here in 1980, issued a letter to the Board of Selectmen on July 21, offering the town his services as caretaker of a "The Pines," which bisects the center of Strathglass Park.
He is seeking to implement a personal 10-year, three-phase plan to add amenities to the overall landscape incrementally.
Dr. Johns joins hospital’s Rural Track Residency Program
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Dr. Michael Johns, a second year resident in the Central Maine Medical Center Family Residency Program, has begun seeing patients at Swift River Family Medicine and Rumford Hospital.
A Canadian native, Johns did his undergraduate work in finance and economics at Bishop’s University in Quebec and earned his MD degree at the Universidad Iberoamericana in the Dominican Republic.
Johns is in his second year of residency and will spend this year and next in the Rural Track Residency program based at Rumford Hospital.
Bluegrass band to play at Skye
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present The Spinney Brothers. Performances will be held at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday.
Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session 1hour prior to curtain at Skye and Unity. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.
Accidental drowning is ruled
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amNORTH SURPLUS TOWNSHIP -- The Maine Medical Examiners Office has released the cause of death of the two swimmers found on the afternoon of July 26 in Lower Richardson Lake by the Maine Warden Service.
According to Edith A. Smith, director of information and education for Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, the deceased have been positively identified as Hoang Vo, 26, of Kingston, MA and Phi Ngoc Le, 30, of Wilmington, MA.

An air-head balloon festival
Aug 05, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Recently, 49 Franklin hosted the Air-Head Balloon Festival.
The event featured the amazing and zany Jer Remian and the incredible and foolish antics of Scot Grassette.
Remian performed his amazing and wacky stunts for families. His specialty is his giant balloon creations. Youngsters marvelled at the giant birds, masks, hats, and zoo animals.

Hospital auxiliary purchases solarium furniture

Artwork for patient rooms, also purchased by the Auxiliary, is awaiting hanging.
