  • New plow truck will cost $120K

    MEXICO -- The total cost for the town's new plow truck will be around $120,000.

    At the selectmen's meeting on July 26, the board approved approved spending $50,000 to $55,000 with H.P. Fairfield, which includes $21,000 for an airflow, side tip, multi-purpose truck body as well as to get the plow truck rigged by H.P. Fairfield. It was noted that this kind of truck body will provide more of a payload, which will produce a savings in trip costs.

    A BUG'S LIFE -- Last Thursday, the Rumford Public Library Children's Theatre presented the theatrical performance of "A Bug's Life," based on the Disney/Pixar film production of the same name.   • Brainstorming meeting about old Peru school

    PERU -- The Peru Elementary School Building Committee will hold a public meeting at the old Peru Elementary School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

    The purpose of the meeting is to brainstorm fundraising ideas that will enable the building to support itself financially. The PES Building Committee has existed in one form or another since before the building ceased operation as a school and has examined a number of options for generating income.

  • Six more months on moratorium

    RUMFORD -- Following a hour-long public hearing and continued discussion during the regular meeting, selectmen Thursday voted unanimously to extend the current moratorium on wind power projects another 180 days.

    The new moratorium will begin today, when the current moratorium expires.

    Buccina said he felt the board is educated enough this subject matter and now know what needs to be done to develop a third proposed ordinance. "As a board, we can connect where we disagreed in the past."

  • Massage therapy now at Tah-Dah

    MEXICO- Jennifer Wing, LMT of Peru has opened up shop in the long-standing Mexico business of Tah-dah owned by Tammy Burgess.
    “My ultimate goal is to provide physical and emotional wellness to the people in the area,” noted Wing. “With the relaxing space in the shop, clients will feel at ease and will be able to enjoy their time.”
    Wing offers the basic Swedish massage, as well as myofascial, deep tissue and hot stone treatments.

  • Town putting a stop to Maple Street speeders

    RUMFORD -- For years, as a speedy shortcut through the neighborhood between Lincoln and Maine avenues has created a dangerous situation for residents, motorists and numerous people who walk there.

    Residents on Maple Street, frustrated with the situation, signed a petition requesting the town place two stop signs to help alleviate the problem. On Thursday, the Board of Selectmen not only agreed with the petitioners, but determined that five stop signs are needed.

    Resident and petitioner Harry Powers told the board about two such potential disasters he witnessed recently.

  • A resourceful river runs here

    RUMFORD- In 1970 it was the Clean Air Act created by Senator Edmund Muskie that was dubbed “His most outstanding achievement.” In 2011, it could be remembered as the citizens' most outstanding achievement by creating more recreation near the Androscoggin River.
    Jim Rinaldo and Bill Hine of the River Valley Growth Council are looking forward to working with local residents to achieve a more resourceful River Valley by way of creating scenic views in the creation of walking paths along the River.

    DIXFIELD- As many of you travel between Dixfield and Mexico you notice that you will soon be diverted on to a much smaller, temporary bridge that runs through the parking lots of Blouin's Automotive and extremely close to Blue Moose General Store and garage.
