  • BEACON HOSPICE EXCELLENCE AWARD

    BEACON HOSPICE EXCELLENCE AWARD -- Victorian Villa in Canton was recently honored by Beacon Hospice for the end-of-life care they provide for patients. On June 13, the staff of Victorian Villa attended the award ceremony recognizing their professional contributions to care for the terminally ill. The award was received by Mark Jacobs.

  • Andover Olde Home Days begins Friday

    ANDOVER -- This area's longest continuous celebration -- Andover Olde Home Days -- will get underway this Friday.

    This year's theme is "Main Street Andover" to celebrate all the old time memories of life on Main Street & maybe make some new ones.

    The three-day event will actually kickoff Thursday with the judging of the Gardens, which includes the following categories: flowers, veggies, mixed, organic and flower design (container and hangers), and the Violet Swain category (single Genus), as well as new gardens up to three years, established four years or older.

  • Black Mountain expands race program

    RUMFORD -- Black Mountain of Maine is excited to announce that it will be expanding its junior alpine race program for the next ski season.

    Mark Thibodeau has been hired as the alpine program director. Thibodeau was the race program director at Mt. Abram Ski Resort for the past nine years and was the Leavitt High School coach for 12 years. His team won four state championships, and he was named Maine Coach of the Year in 2002.

  • New plow truck will cost $120K

    MEXICO -- The total cost for the town's new plow truck will be around $120,000.

    At the selectmen's meeting on July 26, the board approved approved spending $50,000 to $55,000 with H.P. Fairfield, which includes $21,000 for an airflow, side tip, multi-purpose truck body as well as to get the plow truck rigged by H.P. Fairfield. It was noted that this kind of truck body will provide more of a payload, which will produce a savings in trip costs.

    A BUG'S LIFE -- Last Thursday, the Rumford Public Library Children's Theatre presented the theatrical performance of "A Bug's Life," based on the Disney/Pixar film production of the same name. The musical-comedy, featuring 38 young actors and actresses, was directed by Susan DeRoehn and Lisa Picard, with Tory Gordon, set director, and Judy O'Neil, costume production.   • Brainstorming meeting about old Peru school

    PERU -- The Peru Elementary School Building Committee will hold a public meeting at the old Peru Elementary School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

    The purpose of the meeting is to brainstorm fundraising ideas that will enable the building to support itself financially. The PES Building Committee has existed in one form or another since before the building ceased operation as a school and has examined a number of options for generating income.

  • Six more months on moratorium

    RUMFORD -- Following a hour-long public hearing and continued discussion during the regular meeting, selectmen Thursday voted unanimously to extend the current moratorium on wind power projects another 180 days.

    The new moratorium will begin today, when the current moratorium expires.

    Buccina said he felt the board is educated enough this subject matter and now know what needs to be done to develop a third proposed ordinance. "As a board, we can connect where we disagreed in the past."

    Wing offers the basic Swedish massage, as well as myofascial, deep tissue and hot stone treatments.
