  • Waste Time With Patty

    According to a recent study by the Environmental Protection Agency, two minutes daily is the average time each household spends recycling.

    Up to 90 percent of our trash has the potential to be recycled. Of this “trash,” five cans are glass bottles and jars, one can is aluminum, five cans are food cans, 10 cans are plastic bottles and jugs and 25 cans are paper.

  • Canadian song writer to perform

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present Order of Canada recipient Lennie Gallant at the Franco American Heritage Center in Lewiston on Tuesday, at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, June 22, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, June 23.

    Curtain at the Franco Center and Skye is 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. Pre-show jam sessions at Skye and Unity start 1 hour prior to curtain.

  • RSU 10 budget passes easily

    DIXFIELD -- Each of the 12 towns for Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 passed the proposed $34.1 million budget, combining for an approval ratio of more than 2-to-1.

    The total vote was 1,632-743, broken down as follows:

    Buckfield, 182-162; Byron, 12-7; Canton, 41-8; Carthage, 14-3; Dixfield, 76-27; Hanover, 16-0; Hartford, 48-22; Mexico, 167-77; Peru, 154-107; Roxbury, 18-5; Rumford, 877-302; and Sumner, 26-23.

  • Sixth graders tour historical society museum

    MEXICO -- "This Old House" (the Mexico Historical Society's museum, 1 Oxford St.) was busy with young people and lots of "old stuff" on June 2.

    The Mexico Historical Society hosted more than 100 sixth graders from the Mountain Valley Middle School. The tour included lots of stories.

    These students have been participating in varied activities in the River Valley to learn and appreciate the past and heritage of the area. Upon arrival by the busloads, the childred were divided into three groups and alternated among three areas for viewing and information.

  • Rumford voters approve town budget

    RUMFORD -- Voters on June 14 approved a $6.8 million for the town, along with social service articles totaling $205,277 for a total budget of $7.05 million.

    Capital improvements totaled $100,000, a $53,900 increase in insurances, and a $20,497 increase for general assistance mostly drove the hike.

    Town Manager Carlo Puiia said funding the capital accounts is based on a five-year plan required by the charter, but town meeting voters had underfunded capital improvements for years. This year they decided to restore $350,000, which is $67,675 less than what Puiia recommended.

  • Mexico budget approved

    MEXICO -- Voters on June 14 approved a town budget of $2.844 million, an increase of 8.98 percent.

    The total budget, including the county and school, is $4.133 million, which represents a 7.73 percent increase.

    Approved by wide margins were $336,354 for administration (town office, officials, etc.), $875,608 for public safety (fire, police, hydrants, etc.), and $648,527 for public works (summer and winter roads)

  • Hospital Annual Appeal donors honored

    RUMFORD -- Rumford Hospital recently honored donors who have given to the Annual Appeal for 10 years or more with a reception, the gift of annual appeal pins and photographs with hospital president John Welsh and members of the Board of Trustees.

    About 70 donors, including individuals, families and organizations were invited to join members of the Board and the Development Committee to celebrate the donors’ commitment to the hospital.

  • River Valley Fourth of July celebration

    RUMFORD -- The Town of Rumford will host the 2011 fourth of July celebration to honor America and the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.

    It will take place in the Hosmer Field Complex on Route 2 on Monday, July 4th, with a rain date of Tuesday, July 5th.

    They will be celebrating with music, family entertainment and a service ceremony. The evening will culminate with a fireworks show presented by Atlas Pyrovision Productions.

    Gates open at 4 p.m., with activities getting underway at 5.

  • Proposed wind ordinance defeated

    RUMFORD -- The future for wind power here remained unclear when voters again defeated the proposed wind ordinance on July 14 by a tally of 696-582.

    This follows the first proposed ordinance that was defeated at the Nov. 2 polls by a tally of 1,339 to 1,048.

  • Safe Voices received $20,000 grant

    REGION -- Safe Voices was chosen to receive a $20,000 grant from The Mary Kay Foundation in October as part of the organization’s annual $3 million national domestic violence grant program.

    Safe Voices is one of 150 domestic violence organizations who participated in the program.
