Backkingdom Road project on tap
May 20, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- The process has begun to start a long overdue road project.
At their May 10 meeting, the Board of Selectmen approved a recommendation by Town Manager John Madigan to go out to bid for a portion of the 3.3-mile Backkingdom Road project, which he said they need to do if they plan to get started on it this summer.
Gateway now lit at night
May 20, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Strathglass Park took a major step toward restoration recently as, for the first time in over a half a century, the imposing granite gateway was lit up at night by lights at the top of each pillar.
The lighting of the gate is the culmination of a two-year effort by a local non-profit, the Strathglass Park Preservation Society, to repair the crumbling mortar in the gate and add historic-looking lighting to the top of each 16-foot granite pillar.
Oxford County democrats to meet

Rosa Scarcelli of Portland will be the speaker as part of the Oxford County Democrat's Rising Stars Series. Rosa Scarcelli, a Wilton native, is best known for her impressive showing in the 2010 Maine Democratic Gubernatorial Primary. She is the CEO of Stanford Management, a company that employs more than 115 people and provides quality affordable housing to thousands of residents, and is a wife and mother of three children.
Clean up in Carthage
May 20, 2011 12:00 amCARTHAGE -- A clean up was held on May 6 in Carthage by the Webb River Valley ATV Club, and the Dirigo High students and teachers.
Members of the Webb River Valley ATV Club who worked on the cleanup were Philip Hill, Peter Robichaud, Ernest Robichaud, Mike Gordon and Sheila Gordon. Carthage resident Lillian Main took time to help as well.
The adults from the Dirigo High School were Linda Cox, Marianne Archard and Karolyn Buotte.

May 20, 2011 12:00 amLast week, I inadvertently reported that first prize for the July 4th River Valley Chamber of Commerce Lucky Duck event is $550 it is actually $500 for first prize followed by second place $250 and third being $150.
You will not only be able to purchase your duck at the Rumford Information Center but many of our member businesses have made the ducks available for purchase throughout the River Valley.
Press Gang to play at Skye
May 20, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present Maine's popular Irish band, “The Press Gang” at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, May 18th and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, May 19th. Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session 1 hour prior to curtain at all both venues. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.

Rumford board adds to proposed economic development budget
May 13, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Due to future economic development that is on the horizon, selectmen increased the funding in the proposed economic development account by $25,000 at their meeting Thursday.
Prior to the action, selectmen had been recommending no funding for the account because $31,000 was being carried forward.
Economic development interest includes a brand name hotel on Route 2, business for the Gateway Project and a proposed call center for the River Valley Technology Center.
Action tabled on cop grant application
May 13, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Requesting an opinion of the town solicitor, the Board of Selectmen Thursday tabled an action that would authorize Police Chief Stacy Carter to apply for an estimated $200,000 federal grant that would pay three years of salary and benefits for a police officer, with the town picking up the fourth year.
