Class of 2011 a close-knit group
Jun 10, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- With 103 graduates, it was smallest class since the merger of 1989, but this group of seniors was very close-knit.
At commencement exercises Thursday evening, students marched into Mike Puiia Gymnasium with a pin on their gowns picturing classmate Danny Garneau, who died a year ago after fighting a long battle with leukemia.
Dirigo grads eager to greet the world

Those were the words of Meredith Brown, one of 60 graduating seniors, speaking during commencement ceremonies at Dirigo High School on Friday.
She began by quoting Henry David Thoreau -- There is no value in life except what you choose to place upon it, and no happiness in any place except what you bring to it yourself.
Ordinance proposals for Rumford
Jun 10, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Besides the budget, voters here Tuesday will also decide on five ordinance amendments and proposed ordinances, as well a proposed charter amendment.
The most publicized asks voters if they wish to adopt a wind energy facilty ordinance. The purposed of the ordinance would be to regulate wind energy facilities that may locate in the Town of Rumford.
RSU 10 towns to vote on budget
Jun 10, 2011 12:00 amDIXFIELD — On Tuesday, residents of the 12-town Western Foothills Regional School Unit 10 will determine the fate of a proposed $34.1 million budget for 2011-12.
On Thursday, a district-wide, town meeting-style vote will be taken prior to a referendum vote to validate the budget on Tuesday.
Buddy MacDonald with fiddle sensation at Skye
Jun 03, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present Celtic Colours International Festival late night host Buddy MacDonald with Cape Breton's young fiddle sensation Rachel Davis.
Performances will be held at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday. Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at Skye and Unity. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.
Hole-In-One Golf Challenge For A Cure

Over 20 teams, representing businesses, organizations, and families will be participating for the 18-hour event which concludes on Saturday with the Hole-in-One Golf Challenge starting at noon.
Mexico PD shows off Humvee

Mexico Police Sgt. Roy Hodsdon said they're getting a lot of positive comments about the sharp looking black Humvee, which he stressed is free cost to the citizens, with the cost of maintenance to be covered by the members of Explorer Post 364.
Rumford Community Home celebrates

Monday was Wizard of Oz Day and several staff dressed up in Oz costumes. The residents had watched the movie on Saturday so they would be a little more familiar with the characters. The Mayor, Glenda the Good Witch, one of the Lollipop kids, Dorothy, Auntie Em, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow were among the characters joining us.Countryfolk to open
Jun 03, 2011 12:00 amEAST DIXFIELD -- The Countryfolk Music Theatre of Route 2 will open its 12th country music season on Memorial Day Weekend on Sunday, May 29 from noon to 6 p.m.
Many regular volunteer musicians, along with newcomers will kick off the summer of free to the public music at the popular venue.
Larry Bisbee, operator of the open-air theatre sais, “We are so pleased to start this 12th season of country music and youth music scholarships and have several country jamborees planned during the summer as well as our “Elvis” look-A-Like Contest.”

Jun 03, 2011 12:00 amThe first few tiny asparagus spears poked through the soil this week in the patch at the edge of the garden, promising many more, much larger ones to come. Asparagus are one of my very favorite vegetables.
It wasn’t always that way. I can remember when I was growing up how I hated them, but now that I think about it, my dislike was because they were soft and mushy and were way overcooked.
