Mock rescue in Grimaldi Field a success
May 27, 2011 12:00 amANDOVER- Citizens traveling through Andover on Saturday may have been concerned at the sight of Lifeflight services and dozens of rescue vehicles from surrounding towns covering Grimaldi Field. This was part of a day-long mock rescue exercise organized by Roxbury Fire Department.
Facing cancer head on
May 27, 2011 12:00 amPERU- In 2002, when Amy (Gammon) Smith was only four months pregnant with her son Gage, she learned she had thyroid cancer. From that point on, she has taught her children that they need to hold their heads high and be courageous in whatever life deals them.
“I was at work the day I got the phone call from my doctor,” noted Amy. “I remember dropping the phone and feeling complete and utter shock. Bad thoughts just go through your mind when you hear the word cancer.”

Aubuchon has grand opening for feed store
May 27, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Aubuchon Hardware held a grand opening over the weekend, celebrating the expansion of the Falmouth store into Purina Feeds.
The store has a new storage building, measuring 16x44 feet in the front and 24x60 in the back. Manager Al Richard said the line includes feeds for goat, chicken, horse and deer.
The grand opening included a free raffle to win a lawn tractor. There was also an event called Sparks Ark: a fun and educational live animal show.
There were also hot dogs for sale, with all proceeds going to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation.
Flea market for Main Street
May 27, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- A flea market will soon be setting up on Main Street.
Making sure to differentiate this from a perpetual lawn sale, the Board of Selectmen gave approval at their May 10 meeting to grant a Hawker's and Peddler's license to Rumford businessman Jim Barnett.
Barnett, who owns the land between Big Daddy's Car Wash and Frosty Delite that used to be the Irving gas station, said, "We're just going to try it...It's low risk and could turn into a business."
Board tells owners to demolish dangerous garages
May 27, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Owners of two dangerous garages were told by selectmen Thursday they have 60 days to take the structures down and get rid of the debris, or the town will get the work done and charge the property owner.
At issue are a two-story garage at 47 Kerr St., which is owned by Aaron and Angela Gallant, and a single-story, 2.5-car garage at 237 Penobscot St. owned by Lee Farrar.
Angela Gallant, the only owner attending the board meeting, asked the board to give her more time and she would complete the work with help from family members and friends.
A PRINCESS PARADE
May 27, 2011 12:00 amA PRINCESS PARADE -- More than 40 young princesses, and a couple of kings, participated in a fun event for youngsters Sunday in an event put on the Cancer Crusaders at American Legion Post 24. Girls in their princess dresses had their nails and makeup done, with their pictures taken. There were crafts, games, two parades and the participants were treated to a lunch. Memorial Day parade
May 27, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD/MEXICO -- Members of Napoleon Ouellette, Post 24 American Legion will observe Memorial Day with a parade and ceremonies at the Rotary Memorial Green in Rumford and at the Memorial Green in Mexico on May 30, with the parade starting at 10 a.m. rain or shine.
Fiddle “Fire Cracker” to play at Skye
May 27, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present PEI fiddle sensation Cynthia MacLeod with Jon Matthews at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday.
Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session one hour prior to curtain at all both venues. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.
Prevent a tragedy
May 27, 2011 12:00 amREGION- Once again, officers throughout the area will be out in force during Memorial Day weekend to insure the safety of those traveling through the River Valley area. Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter noted, “We are focusing on educating citizens to be aware of the laws that help them to be safer in their vehicles. Not one of us in law enforcement wants to knock on anyone's door to notify them of a tragedy.
