  • PEI Fiddle Camp Masters at Skye

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present The Prince Edward Island Fiddle Camp Roadshow with Master instructors Ward MacDonald, Pastelle LeBlanc and Pascal Miousse.

    Three Maine youth groups will open for the Masters at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, May 4, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, May 5.

    Curtain at Skye is 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. Pre-show jam sessions at Skye and Unity start one hour prior to curtain.

  • Taking back prescription drugs

    RUMFORD -- Midway through the four-hour collection effort, Rumford police had already garnered prescription drug containers that nearly filled half a garbage bag.

    They set up beside the pharmacy at Hannaford supermarket on Saturday, collecting unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal, no questions asked. This was the second year they had participated in the National "Take Back Prescription Drugs" Day.

  • Rotary hosts group from Hong Kong

    RIVER VALLEY -- Recently, the River Valley Rotary Club hosted the Group Study Exchange team from Hong Kong.

    The GSE team, from the field of medicine, left from the Hope Association on April 21 at 5:30 a.m. for a presentation at the Saco Bay Rotary Club's breakfast meeting. From there, the team visited LifeFlight at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston before coming back to Rumford for a lunch hosted by the Hope Association.

    In the afternoon, the team traveled to Dixfield to tour the Irving Lumber Mill, then toured the Premium Specialty Hardwoods in Rumford.

  • Effort to grow Rumford

    RUMFORD -- Described as "a way to grow Rumford," selectmen voted unanimously Thursday to begin a process to establish three tax-incremented financing (TIF) districts.

    The vote also voted 4-0 to seek bids to hire a consultant to complete necessary TIF work for the districts. Selectman Mark Belanger was absent.

    Town Manager Carlo Puiia introduced both topics, saying economic development is now knocking on the town's door and “it's a lengthy process and we want to get our ducks in a row.”

  • Walk a Rotary Mile

    REGION- The Rotary clubs of Fryeburg, Bridgton, Oxford Hills, Bethel and Rumford will host walkers and their sponsors as they walk a mile to benefit Rotary International's on-going crusade to end polio world-wide.
    Polio still cripples thousands of children around the world, but with the help of volunteers and sponsors at events such as this, polio can be wiped off the face of the earth forever.

  • Patrols coordinate to educate

    PATROLS COORDINATE TO EDUCATE-- On the Maine/Canada border of Coburn Gore, officers from Maine and New Hampshire State Police, Franklin and Oxford Counties in Maine, and Coos County, NH coordinated efforts with the Surete du Quebec and Ontario Provincial Police on Friday to launch the Traffic Safety Without Borders operation.

  • Cape Breton Kitchen Party comes to Skye

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present Cape Breton fiddler Colin Grant with Jason MacDonald and Adam Young at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday.

    Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session one hour prior to curtain at all both venues. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.

  • Hospital president to retire

    RUMFORD -- John Welsh has announced his retirement as president of Rumford Hospital, effective July 1, after 23 years of service to the Rumford area community.

    It's been a tough decision for me -- not whether or not to retire or where to spend my retirement -- but what would be the best time to leave," noted Welsh, adding, "I don't think there could me a better time than now."
