  • SWIM PROGRAM DONATION

    SWIM PROGRAM DONATION -- Coulthard's Pools of Mexico recently donated swim trainers, goggles, noodles, dive rings, beach balls and a lap counterr to the Greater Rumford Community Center's swim program. From left are Stephanie Turner and Becky Coulthard (owner) of Coulthard's, and GRCC Program Director Bob Anderson, who noted that these items will help youngsters in the swim lesson program to get used to the water, not only at the Black Mountain pool, but at lessons taught at Roxbury and Worthley Pond as well.

  • Residents encouraged to add mobile phones to emergency database

    PARIS -- When a new mass emergency notification system goes online, Oxford County residents with cellphones will be encouraged to enter their mobile phone numbers on the county emergency agency's website.

    A new system expected to be fully operational in the coming weeks will use the 911 database and mapping software to inform residents of local emergencies, such as tornadoes, floods, chemical spills and hostage situations via telephone calls.

  • Town to consider contracting mowing

    MEXICO -- The Board of Selectmen are exploring the advantages of contracting the mowing at the Mexico Recreation Park.

    At the regular board meeting on April 12, resident Todd Piper, who lives down the road from the recreation facility, originally had proposed a verbal bid $3,000 to contract with the town for mowing, then adjusted it to $5,000 after learning about additional mowing that would be involved.

  • Local daffodil effort raises over $6,000

    RUMFORD -- A celebration tea was held recently at Rumford Hospital for the volunteers of the Northern Oxford Daffodil Committee, who raised more than $6,000 during the annual American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days.

    Evelyn Bodemer, who has chaired the local effort for the past 10 years, thanked the 30 volunteers who participated this year, including co-chairs Judy Broomhall of Mexico and Lorraine Nadeau of Rumford, Bethel organizer Caroline Gould and Andover organizer Ruby Kulpa.

    RUMFORD- Do you remember the first movie you ever saw at the drive-in movie theater here? Were you one of the first to see the first movie in 1949 when it opened? Did you reminisce of its history in 1985 when it closed and then was torn down a year later? What would ever become of that large space?

    Businesses of this town and the surrounding communities have had to take a look at how they operate and find ways to save money, while still providing quality service to their customers.

  • Sludge Suckers Tank Service having open house

    MEXICO -- A local business, Sludge Suckers Tank Service, features a unique machine that can clean the sludge out of your oil tank at a fraction of the cost it would take to replace an oil tank.

    Owner Jon Young said he originally bought the sludge removal system because his father, Steve, was told by a reputable furnace installation company that he needed to change his oil tank due to the amount of sludge in the tank and that it was going to cost $1,200 to $1,500 to change out the tank.

  • “Take Back Prescription Drugs” Day

    REGION -- The local police departments of Rumford, Mexico and Dixfield, along with the Oxford County Sheriff's Department, will be participating in National “Take Back Prescription Drugs” Day to help people dispose of prescription drugs in a proper and safe way for one day only on Saturday, April 30.

    This will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

  • Cole cleared in 10 of 11 sexual assault charges

    PARIS -- A Rumford man accused of sexually assaulting a girl over six years was found not guilty on 10 of 11 counts Wednesday in Oxford County Superior Court.

    The jury of six men and six women was unable to reach a decision on the last gross sexual assault charge against James V. Cole, Jr., 32, after nearly nine hours of deliberation.

    As a clerk read the jury's verdicts, Cole's family hugged one another. The family of the girl he was accused of sexually assaulting from 2003 to 2008 sat silent.

    Justice Robert Clifford declared a mistrial on the 11th charge.

  • Mexico PD gets a Hummer

    MEXICO -- By mid-May, the police department will welcome a turtleback Hummer to its fleet.

    The 1987 diesel, 6.2 liter, eight-cylinder vehicle was acquired at no charge through a demobilization military surplus program at Ft. Dix, NJ, according to Mexico Police Sgt. Roy Hodsdon. Law enforcement agencies all over the country vie to obtain the surplus items.

  • Finance Committee's turn at budget

    RUMFORD -- The Board of Selectmen recently recommended a budget that essentially is flat funded. Now it's the Finance Committee's turn.
