  • Send-off, fundraiser for McPhee HOF trip

    RUMFORD -- This Sunday, a send-off/fundraiser will be held at 49 Franklin for sports reporter Bob McPhee to cover expenses in June when he travels to Oklahoma to accept a national wrestling award for courage and to be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

  • RECOGNITION DAY

    RECOGNITION DAY -- Chisholm Head Start held a recognition day on April 29, when volunteers were recognized for all their hard work. Because of all the ongoing support from families and the community, 80 children have been given a head start this year. Special thanks to Rumford Power, Oxford Federal Credit Union, Franklin Savings Bank, Key Bank and Lakeshore Learning Company for making Chisholm Head Start's recognition day successful and supporting their program.

  • BIKE RODEO

    BIKE RODEO -- Laurie Soucy of the RSU 10 Wellness Team fits a bicycle helmet to the head of three-year-old Madison Blanchard during the annual Mountain Valley Kids Fest Child Advocacy Day on Saturday, hosted by the Rumford Eagles. Before that, Rumford Police Sgt. Doug Maifeld spoke to the youngsters about the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. Seventy helmets were handed out at the event, purchased through the Healthy Maine Partnership Grant.

  • ADOPT A SPOT EFFORT

    ADOPT A SPOT EFFORT -- Brush and trash were no match for the hardworking members of The River Valley Rotary Club and the Strathglass Park Preservation Society. They were clearing and cleaning near The Chisholm School and the entrance to Strathglass Park, where Rotary will Adopt A Spot.   • Dance with Act V at 49 Franklin

    RUMFORD -- Act V will perform 50s, 60s and 70s Pop and Rock & Roll from 8–10 p.m. on Saturday at 49 Franklin.

    They are the live part of a Sock Hop that starts at 7 p.m. with music by DJ Scot. Doors open at 6 p.m. Come for a wonderful evening of dancing and singing along!

    The music of the 50s–70s is infectious, joyful and just plain fun! So what could be more enjoyable than a group whose repertoire is classic Rock & Roll and Pop of that era, and whose singing style is also infectious, joyful and just plain fun? “Act V” is that group!

  • Child Advocacy Day this Saturday

    RUMFORD -- The Rumford Eagles will host a Child Advocacy Day for area youth on Saturday at the Rumford Eagles.

    From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., representatives from local police, medical and fire departments, along with groups from the Greater Rumford Community Center, Oxford County Sheriff, Mexico Recreation Department, Rumford Hospital, RSU #10 Wellness Team and other youth groups will have presentations to benefit the children as well as their parents.

  • Ice out contest winner

    RIVER VALLEY -- Gerald Deanis, who lives at Roxbury Pond, is the winner of the fifth annual Rumford Falls Times' Ice Out Contest.

    Dennis Daniel, owner of Ellis Pond Variety, said he was informed by a Game Warden that the official ice out for Roxbury Pond was 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.

    "Just the Saturday before, 70 percent of the pond was covered with ice," he noted, adding that Wednesday was when temperatures shot up into the seventies.

  • There is hunger in the River Valley

    RUMFORD- There are currently 54 senior citizens in the River Valley on the Commodity Supplemental Food Program waiting list with another 150 waiting in the Southern Oxford County area.

    The 1st Annual Healthy Hearts 5K will take place on May 15 in Rumford.
