Rotarians extend a helping hand
May 06, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD- Area Rotarians recently traveled to South Portland to make their initial delivery of mobility devices to be shipped to Africa next month as part of the world-wide Crutches 4 Africa project. They were assisted in the delivery by Eddie Naples of Region 9 School of Applied Technology.
Spring cleanup in Mexico starts Monday
May 06, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- Town Manager John Madigan announced that the annual spring cleanup will begin here on Monday.
He told selectmen on April 26 that residents need to have their items at curbside in time before public works will come around to pickup on a street just one time.
Madigan said the pickup only required a week and a half last year. Residents can also transports items for cleanup for free to the transfer station for a total of three weeks.
Rules and the cleanup schedule are post in the town office.
Board says no to bidding out mowing
May 06, 2011 12:00 amMEXICO -- In a followup to their previous meeting, the Board of Selectmen voted on April 26 that they will continue mowing the recreation park with in-house labor rather than bid out the job.
On April 12, resident Todd Piper, who lives down the road from the recreation facility, originally had proposed a verbal bid $3,000 to contract with the town for mowing, then adjusted it to $5,000 after learning about additional mowing that would be involved.
PEI Fiddle Camp Masters at Skye
May 06, 2011 12:00 amREGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present The Prince Edward Island Fiddle Camp Roadshow with Master instructors Ward MacDonald, Pastelle LeBlanc and Pascal Miousse.
Three Maine youth groups will open for the Masters at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday, May 4, and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, May 5.
Curtain at Skye is 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. Pre-show jam sessions at Skye and Unity start one hour prior to curtain.
Taking back prescription drugs
May 06, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Midway through the four-hour collection effort, Rumford police had already garnered prescription drug containers that nearly filled half a garbage bag.
They set up beside the pharmacy at Hannaford supermarket on Saturday, collecting unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal, no questions asked. This was the second year they had participated in the National "Take Back Prescription Drugs" Day.
Rotary hosts group from Hong Kong
May 06, 2011 12:00 amRIVER VALLEY -- Recently, the River Valley Rotary Club hosted the Group Study Exchange team from Hong Kong.
The GSE team, from the field of medicine, left from the Hope Association on April 21 at 5:30 a.m. for a presentation at the Saco Bay Rotary Club's breakfast meeting. From there, the team visited LifeFlight at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston before coming back to Rumford for a lunch hosted by the Hope Association.
In the afternoon, the team traveled to Dixfield to tour the Irving Lumber Mill, then toured the Premium Specialty Hardwoods in Rumford.
Effort to grow Rumford
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Described as "a way to grow Rumford," selectmen voted unanimously Thursday to begin a process to establish three tax-incremented financing (TIF) districts.
The vote also voted 4-0 to seek bids to hire a consultant to complete necessary TIF work for the districts. Selectman Mark Belanger was absent.
Town Manager Carlo Puiia introduced both topics, saying economic development is now knocking on the town's door and “it's a lengthy process and we want to get our ducks in a row.”
Walk a Rotary Mile
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amREGION- The Rotary clubs of Fryeburg, Bridgton, Oxford Hills, Bethel and Rumford will host walkers and their sponsors as they walk a mile to benefit Rotary International's on-going crusade to end polio world-wide.
Polio still cripples thousands of children around the world, but with the help of volunteers and sponsors at events such as this, polio can be wiped off the face of the earth forever.Easter egg hunt

Patrols coordinate to educate
Apr 29, 2011 12:00 amPATROLS COORDINATE TO EDUCATE-- On the Maine/Canada border of Coburn Gore, officers from Maine and New Hampshire State Police, Franklin and Oxford Counties in Maine, and Coos County, NH coordinated efforts with the Surete du Quebec and Ontario Provincial Police on Friday to launch the Traffic Safety Without Borders operation.
