  • Eastman publishes autobiography

    MEXICO- Local author and humorist Robt Eastman of Mexico has released a paperback version of his work, “Welcome to Mexico the Other Mexico.” The book is a series of short stories that documents what life was like for a young kid growing up in the small mill town during the 1950's and 60's.

    RUMFORD -- Make your reservations now for RAAPA's 14th annual Dinner Thearer on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30 at the Eagles Hall.

    The evening will consist of three short one-act plays, a mini-concert by the RAAPA Chorus and a buffet dinner. Cost is $30 per person, which includes the buffet, beverage, dessert tax and gratuity. There will be a cash bar for soft and alcoholic drinks.   • Rumford soldiers’ ingenuity keeps airfield clear of ice

    LOGAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Task Force Knighthawk soldiers’ ingenuity was tested at Forward Operating Base Shank in December when it became apparent there was a need to remove ice from the runway.
    “We realized we needed something to get rid of ice just before it started to snow,” said U.S. Army Spc. Lee Hough, a wheeled-vehicle mechanic with Company E, TF Knighthawk, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, and a native of Rumford, Maine.

  • Advantage completes their move

    RUMFORD- There was plenty of excitement at 160 Congress St. last week at the site of the new Advantage Insurance office with prizes and give aways galore.

    Owner of the business, Mark Cote, made a nice donation to the River Valley Fireworks Committee, but not without making them work for it. He and his staff strung together 15 $10 bills as a ribbon and allowed committee members Mary Lapointe and Greg Buccina to do the honors.

    The tips of the daffodils and tulips are finally reaching through the snow, the mud is ankle deep in our dirt driveway, and litter is making a reappearance on the sides of the roads, assuring me that spring has, in fact, finally arrived.

    Sap still drips down the sides of our old maple trees. We didn’t tap any this year, but my brother did on the lot adjacent to our land, and commercial growers are saying that despite this seemingly never-ending winter, it’s a good year for making maple syrup.

  • Marijuana growing operation found

    RUMFORD -- An elaborate marijuana growing operation was discovered on Pine Street on April 12 while police were conducting a routine bail check on a Rumford man.

    Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter reported that Joshua N. Gilbert, 24 and Heather Souweine, 27, of 328 Pine St. were charged with unlawful furnishing in Scheduled Z Drugs, Class D and cultivating marijuana, Class C.

    Gilbert was also charged with violating conditions of release due to the new criminal conduct.

  • Free medicine disposal day scheduled

    RIVER VALLEY -- According to the Partnership for a Drug Free America, approximately, every day 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.

    More than seven million Americans currently abuse prescription drugs, according to the 2009 Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health.  Maine is no exception. In fact, we have one of the highest incidence rates of prescription drug abuse in the country.

  • SWIM PROGRAM DONATION

    SWIM PROGRAM DONATION -- Coulthard's Pools of Mexico recently donated swim trainers, goggles, noodles, dive rings, beach balls and a lap counterr to the Greater Rumford Community Center's swim program. From left are Stephanie Turner and Becky Coulthard (owner) of Coulthard's, and GRCC Program Director Bob Anderson, who noted that these items will help youngsters in the swim lesson program to get used to the water, not only at the Black Mountain pool, but at lessons taught at Roxbury and Worthley Pond as well.

  • Residents encouraged to add mobile phones to emergency database

    PARIS -- When a new mass emergency notification system goes online, Oxford County residents with cellphones will be encouraged to enter their mobile phone numbers on the county emergency agency's website.

    A new system expected to be fully operational in the coming weeks will use the 911 database and mapping software to inform residents of local emergencies, such as tornadoes, floods, chemical spills and hostage situations via telephone calls.
