  • Scouts compete in District Pinewood Derby

    RUMFORD -- Fourth grader Isaac Dupuis, a Pack 580 Cub Scout, carefully placed his Monster brand Pinewood Derby car in lane two of the four-lane track.

    Together with his dad, Andrew Dupuis, he said he spent about four weeks working on his car. A veteran of these races three years running, the 10 year old had this advice -- "I learned to make my car flatter so the air goes over it instead of against it."

  • Peak-a-Week Club sets 2011 event schedule

    REGION- The Peak-a-Week Club has set their schedule for the 2011 season and hope to see more people out enjoying the fantastic adventures that are ready to be had throughout the area. All experience levels are welcome.

  • MVMS to host UMaine Symphonic Band

    MEXICO -- As part of the 2011 concert tour, the UMaine Symphonic Band will be performing a free concert on Thursday, April 14 at the Mountain Valley Middle School.

    The hour-long spring concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium. Prior to that concert, members of the MVMS band will entertain.

    MVMS Music Director Dan Labonte, who invited the band here, noted that this is important for teaching lifelong learning skills to his students. He said the band will arrive at the school around 3:20 p.m., when the school will provide a meal for them.

  • Celtic fiddle series continues

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present American Concert Master Bruce Molsky to complete part III of the “Masters of the Celtic Fiddle” at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Sunday and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Monday.

    Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. There is a pre-show jam session one hour prior to curtain at all both venues. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.

  • Athletic directors leaving both high schools

    DIXFIELD -- When things are running smoothly, every athletic director is barely recognized. However, when a situation or problem is encountered, they need to step to the forefront and be accountable.

    Although the former is preferred, when an AD is presented with a situation, he or she must be assertive. These decisions generally draw both positive and negative criticism, but the message is delivered in the best interest of the student-athletes.

  • Masters of the Celtic Fiddle

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts presents part II of the “Master's of the Celtic Fiddle” with World famous Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday.

    Curtain at Skye is 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Unity. Pre-show jam sessions at Skye and Unity start one hour prior to curtain.

  • Carnival of Magic on April 17

    RUMFORD -- Ring 362 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and Aether Arts will present Carnival of Magic at 49 Franklin Reception Hall at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 17.

    The show features magic, contact juggling, dance, and feats of daring usually confined to sideshows on the carnival midway.

    Carnival of Magic is the first public show at 49 Franklin by I.B.M. Ring 362, a nonprofit group for the promotion of the magical arts, and their artistic collaborators, Aether Arts.
