Issues debated at wind ordinance workshop
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amRUMFORD -- Issues regarding the numbers to plug into the State Planning Office wind ordinance template from which selectmen are working was debated during a workshop Thursday.
No votes were taken as the board wanted this to be a workshop, but there was plenty of debate during the 150-minute session in the Rumford Falls Auditorium.
Towns getting solid waste rebate
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amRIVER VALLEY -- With the help of recycling revenues on an upward trend, the six towns that make up the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste Board will be getting a rebate.
Mexico Town Manager John Madigan, who also serves as the administrator for NORSWB, said that in March, the towns of Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Roxbury and Byron will each receive a one-month rebate of their cost to the solid waste district, a total of $72,243.08. The total assessments to the towns is $866,917, a figure that has remained the same since 2007.
Edward J. Carey, Jr.
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amSCARBOROUGH -- Edward J. Carey, Jr., 94, of Scarborough, formerly of Rumford, died on Feb. 27, 2011, at Seaside Nursing Home in Portland.
He lived in the Rumford/Mexico area for 76 years and in Scarborough for 18 years.
Edward was born in Rumford on June 2, 1916, the son of Edward J. and Bessie Skillin Carey Sr. He grew up in Mexico and where he graduated from Mexico High School in 1934.

Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amCATCH OF THE DAY-- Chandler Milligan of Peru is seen here with the largest togue caught in a friendly competition with his dad Dean, brothers Nick and Giovanni and family friend Andy Crockett (who caught two, but not nearly as impressive). The families spent a beautiful day ice fishing on Moosehead Lake in Rockwood recently. The fish was caught in roughly 30 feet of water off the end of Farm Island with the line set six-feet under the ice.
Safety inspection finds violations; no fines
Mar 04, 2011 12:01 amMEXICO -- A recent safety inspection by the Department of Labor uncovered a variety of infractions in town buildings.
"There were a lot of electrical issues...nothing major," noted Town Manager John Madigan, who added, "But it was not as bad a I thought it would be."
He said some of the issues have already been resolved and others are in the process. The inspection was requested by Fire Chief Gary Wentzell, so there will be no fines assessed.
