  • Scout tour

  • A Cape Breton Kitchen Party

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present Cape Breton performers Wendy Mac Isaac and Andrea Beaton at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in South Carthage on Wednesday March 2 and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, March 3. Curtain is at 7 p.m. at Skye and 7:30 p.m. in Unity.

    There is a pre-show jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain at all both venues. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with the artists for a few minutes.

  • Bernard stepping down as MVHS AD

    RUMFORD -- Whenever John Bernard accepted additional responsibilities, his main objective is to do the best job possible, so after wearing various hats he has decided to retire at the end of the school year after 35 years of educational work.

    Bernard's past seven years was quite busy as the athletic director at Mountain Valley High School. It has been extremely rewarding, however, he turned 60 in January and having reached normal retirement age, decided it was time to seek other ventures.

  • Police to seek free vehicle

    RUMFORD -- Selectmen gave approval Thursday to an effort that could provide the police department with a free, low-mileage vehicle.

    By virtue of a 3-1 vote of the board (Mark Belanger opposed), Police Chief Stacy Carter will seek a vehicle through the Department of Defense, which is providing no longer used, low-mileage vehicles through a program called Defense for

    Utilization for Law Enforcement.

  • 055-Fundraising takes on new face08

    REGION- Fundraising events have been going on for years. Families and townspeople gathered together at the grange and legion halls to offer their support through suppers, raffles, dances and in recent years Chinese auctions and walks as well as other great ideas like ATV rides and toy runs are becoming more popular.
    As more citizens become less active with sit down jobs, computers and indoor games, they are becoming more aware of their health, thus, road races are gaining a lot of attendance for adults and children alike.

  • Firefighter hired, pending budget approval

    RUMFORD -- Following a lengthly discussion, selectmen Thursday approved the hiring of a firefighter, pending the approval of the budget in June.

    By a 3-1 vote, the board okayed the recommendation by Fire Chief Bob Chase to hire Mike Arsenault of Rumford, who will replace firefighter Mark Tripp, who left to join the Auburn Fire Department.

    ROXBURY- Walking out onto Ellis Pond for the 32nd Annual Larry Mercier Ice Fishing Derby always provides a new and rewarding experience. This year with the sun shining and hardly a breeze to be felt, the snow was blinding and the air light. The pond was scattered with traps.

    It was a great day to be on the ice with your family and friends and there were many who proved just that.

  • Hope for heart health

    Clients and support staff of the Hope Association are seen here observing Wear Red on Friday. In honor of February being Heart Awareness Month many local businesses and organizations are following suit with Wear Red Fridays. Saturday will culminate the month with Rumford Hospital's Annual Heart to Heart Conference.

  • February is American Heart Month

    American Heart Month occurs in February and is an annual designation by Congress for Americans to become better educated about heart health and lead heart-healthier lives.
    Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association (SCAA) has provided the public with an increase awareness of heart health and Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) among the general public.

  • 300 attend skating party

    RUMFORD -- With free food and toys, terrific ice and favorable weather, more than 300 people of all ages made the trip to the ice skating facility on the DARE field Saturday for an Old Fashioned Family Fun Day.

    Sponsored by the Rumford Parks Department, the event was held in appreciation for the public making this a banner year for the ice skating facility.
