  • Search committee taking shape

    DIXFIELD -- Members of the RSU 10 board met with Supt. Tom Ward Monday night to establish a six-member superintendent search committee.

    On Wednesday, the committee will meet to select the members of the school district and community who will serve on the interview committee. The search committee will also set dates for public informational meetings to receive input from staff and the public on the characteristics and attributes they would like to see in a new superintendent.

  • Tour to Costa Rica ok'd

    MEXICO -- A service learning tour to Costa Rica in April 2014 was approved by the RSU 10 Board of Directors at their meeting on Feb. 25.

    The trip is being organized by Buckfield teachers Zachary and Maria Reinstein, who were present to explain the event.

    They said the nine-day tour is open to the entire RSU, but restricted to ages 12 and up. Adults will act as chaperones. There will be a minimum of 12 people, but no more than 25.

  • Hebert authors work injury book

    DIXFIELD -- Lauren Hebert, DPT, of SmartCare Physical Therapy in Dixfield has been selected by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to author a monograph book on “Work Injury Prevention and Ergonomics.”

    The Orthopedics Section of the APTA selected Dr. Hebert to author this monograph as a graduate study guide for physical therapists focusing on workplace musculo-skeletal disorders such as upper extremity overuse tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and lower back problems. The final text is to be finished by this spring.

  • Free trial day offered at Black Mountain

    RUMFORD -- In an effort to promote the Chisholm Ski Club Alpine Race Program, a free trial day is being offered this Sunday. A full day of on-snow training will be free (with the purchase of a $15 lift ticket) for anyone ages 8-18 who is interested in the program but would like to see what it entails before joining.

  • Possible plan for Rumford's future

    RUMFORD -- What will Rumford look like in 10 years?

    The answer is not clear, but the path to get there could well be in the town's comprehensive plan, to be voted on by citizens in June.

    On March 5, members of the Comprehensive Plan Update Committee presented to selectmen what they have been working on over the past 18 months.

    Kevin Saisi, chairman of the Comprehensive Plan Update Committee, said, "If people approve this, then this is what people would like to see happen."

  • 3rd Annual Healthy Hearts 5K

    RUMFORD- It’s that time of year again when the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition is gearing up for their annual Healthy Hearts 5K Run/Walk. In its’ third year, this community event is growing in participation and in bringing awareness to the River Valley.

  • Dog helps save owner

    RUMFORD- On the morning of January 6, Mike Soubble and his black lab, Bud, took a routine walk to the end of the driveway for the daily paper when Mike slipped and fell. Bud took a seat next to his owner, catching the eye of a passer-by.

    “I was taking my girls to the mountain to ski,” stated Richard Cote. “I saw the dog sitting a few feet away from the side of the road and saw Mr. Soubble laying on the ground next to him. I turned around and went back and that’s when we saw he was hurt pretty bad.”
