The Fretless at Skye

Household Hazardous Waste Collection
May 17, 2013 12:00 amMEXICO -- The River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition in collaboration with Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments and Northern Oxford Solid Waste will be hosting a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Region 9 parking lot.
This event is open to the towns of Rumford, Mexico, Dixfield, Peru, Roxbury and Byron.
Androscoggin, Oxford counties health rankings improve
May 17, 2013 12:00 amREGION -- In a national health ranking of all counties by state, Androscoggin County was deemed the sixth healthiest county in Maine, a notable improvement over its 2012 ranking of 11th, according to a news release distributed by MaineHealth.

Memorial Day parade set
May 17, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD/MEXICO -- Members of Napoleon Ouellette, Post 24 American Legion will observe Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, with a parade along with ceremonies at the Rotary Memorial Green in Rumford and at the Veteran’s Memorial Green in Mexico.
Americans pay tribute on Memorial Day to those who fell in battle defending our country. The observance had its beginnings following the Civil War when Southerners marked the graves of those who died fighting for the Confederacy. On this day, we honor all of America’s war dead – those who died, that freedom might live.
Young scholars receive college boost
May 17, 2013 12:00 amMEXICO- Seventeen children in grades 3 through 6 throughout the RSU 10 district were recently awarded with $100 scholarships to be used towards their college endeavors. The students were honored at a pizza and cake party in the Region 9 cafeteria.
For the second year, Dead River Company has combined forces with Maine College Circle to help students recognize and understand the importance of higher education, the value of college and opportunities that are available to everyone.
The Market at Mexico to open
May 17, 2013 12:00 amMEXICO -- The Market at Mexico will be opening to the public this Thursday.
Carl Cutting said vendors selling breads, pastries, vegetables and crafts will be setting up under the former Lazarou canopy beside the Mexico Chicken Coop on Main Street.
He said they will open at 9 a.m. and sell until 3 or 4 p.m. They are also planning to open on Fridays, depending on how it goes.
Cutting said the canopy will be decorated in a Mexican theme as they try to attract the attention of passing motorists.
The Backyard Devils coming to Skye

Healthy Hearts and full bellies
May 17, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD- For the third consecutive year, the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition will be hosting their Healthy Hearts 5K on Sunday, beginning at 94 River St., race time is 10 a.m.
Registration is open to the public for just $20 before the day of the race, $25 the day of the race and families of students in local schools can register their family of four for only $10.
Keeping with a community event feel, money raised from this years race will benefit Maine Harvest for Hunger through The University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
