  • AED deployed for personal use

    MEXICO- Med-Care is pleased to announce that it has just deployed an Automated External Defibrillator to a common citizen for personal use. Recently the device was deployed to a family in the Lewiston. This family is very familiar with cardiovascular disease and has first-hand experiences. After several close calls requiring the ICD placement, later they feel it is time to be proactive. He has plans for his wife, family members, and friends to receive training on the use of this device as well as CPR and we are assisting him in accomplishing this.

  • Tax preparation volunteers wanted

    REGION -- Oxford County CA$H Coalition is looking for tax preparation volunteers to help local citizens prepare their tax returns.

    Each year, Oxford County is missing out on an estimated $1 million in tax refunds, because people are not filing their returns or filing them incorrectly. The CA$H program provides training for volunteers to help families with incomes under $51,000 obtain their tax refunds.

  • Registrations being accepted for master gardener course

    REGION -- The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is once again offering the very popular Master Gardener Volunteer training in 2013.

    For the first time, the course is being offered in two locations -- Thursday evenings at the South Paris Extension office and Wednesday afternoons at Region 9 Technical School in Mexico.

  • Town opts to repair damaged sand truck

    RUMFORD -- Continuing their discussion from the prior meeting, selectmen voted 4-1 Thursday to opt to repair their damaged sanding truck rather than accelerating the time table to purchase a new replacement vehicle.

    The decision was reached based on research by Selectman Brad Adley that the engine wasn't damaged in the Dec. 9 accident, when the truck and its sanding equipment were damaged after the truck slid sideways on black ice.

  • Ice fishing derby features $2,000 grand prize

    ROXBURY POND -- This year's 34th annual Larry Mercier Memorial Ice Fishing Derby features a $2,000 grand prize for anyone catching the three- to four-pound tagged brook trout.

    The event, sponsored by the Mexico Lions Club, will take place on Roxbury Pond from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, with a rain date of Sunday, Feb. 17.

    Anglers from all over this region and beyond are expected to gather here for fun, fishing and a chance to win some cash. This event might be especially large this winter.

  • Pantries taking inventory

    PERU- Food pantries and other assistance groups met last week with Good Shephard Food Bank at the Servant's Heart pantry to discuss possible delivery to pantries throughout the area. 

    Currently, each individual pantry has a volunteer who travels to Lewiston to pick up the items from GSFP. The new goal is to eliminate the need for that volunteer to be away from the pantry spending their own gas money and taking away from their time they could better spend in the pantry.
