  • MVHS Civil Rights Team urges students to take action

  • RSU 10 delaying meetings, budget votes

    DIXFIELD -- Regular meetings of the RSU 10 board and the timeline for adopting a 2013-14 budget have been changed to allow the state time to determine whether the school district will be responsible for half the state’s contribution to teachers' retirement costs.

    Superintendent Tom Ward said this week that the districtwide meeting vote and the referendum validation vote will likely move to June.

    Along with those changes, the public hearings in each of the three regions also will be rescheduled for later than the late May dates originally announced.

  • Regionalization talks Wednesday

    RUMFORD -- A public workshop about sharing or combining services will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Rumford Falls Auditorium.

    As a result of preliminary discussion between Rumford and Mexico officials, the group supported asking Municipal Resources, Inc. of Meredith, NH to address questions from town officials about the company's specialty -- regionalization/consolidation studies. All River Valley towns are invited to the session, with Municipal Resources, Inc. reps Don Jutton (president) and Alan Gould (vice president/CEO) presenting information and answering questions.

  • School resource officer proposed

    RUMFORD -- A school resource officer will be proposed when the Board of Selectmen meet on Thursday, May 16.

    At last Thursday's meeting, Police Chief Stacy Carter announced to selectmen that he will request that the town, together with RSU 10, submit an application for a school resource officer.

    The application would be to apply for an estimated $125,000 Community Oriented Policing Services grant from the U.S. Department of Justice that would pay three years of salary and benefits for a police officer. The town would pick up the fourth year.

  • Business Island will keep concrete sidewalks

    RUMFORD -- With disheveled sidewalks causing problems for walkers and wheelchair-bound residents in the downtown, the thought had been to replace the concrete sidewalks with asphalt.

    However, following a discussion with Public Works Superintendent Andy Russell, the Board of Selectmen voted 3-1 Thursday to continue with concrete. Board Chairman Greg Buccina was the lone dissenter.

    Town Manager Carlo Puiia began the discussion by saying that although the Public Works capital improvement plan had already been approved, they want to do some work on the sidewalks.

  • River Valley’s first worker’s memorial ceremony

    RUMFORD -- A small crowd of 20 gathered on Sunday for the first memorial ceremony to honor workers who have died because of workplace accidents, illness or disease.

    Speakers included Senator John Patrick, who spoke about the needless deaths that occur and that no one should die trying to make a living.

  • Towns presented with tax cap ordinances

    RUMFORD/MEXICO -- With issues facing the paper mill, and the state and federal budgets, tax cap petitions have been presented before select boards in Rumford and Mexico.

    Last week, the Rumford selectmen unanimously approved placing a proposed ordinance before voters in June that would initially cap municipal spending at $6.2 million. Meanwhile, last night, Mexico selectmen held a special meeting to decide whether to accept a tax ordinance capping the operating cost of the town to the amount of $2,726,731, which is a 10 percent decrease in the previous year's operating town cost.

  • Rumford doctor is Maine’s Family Physician of the Year

    Dr. Dieter Kreckel, M.D., of Rumford was recognized last month as Maine’s Family Physician of the Year.

    REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will present Legendary Gaelic singer Mary Jane Lamond & Wendy MacIsaac at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in So Carthage on Wednesday, May 1.

    Curtain is 7 p.m. and a jam session will start one hour before curtain.
