Societies pay visit to state complex
May 03, 2013 12:00 amAUGUSTA- Members of the Rumford, Mexico, Peru and Dixfield historical societies traveled to Augusta last week for a tour of the capitol building, as well as the Maine State Museum, the Maine Archives, and the Blaine House.
Presidents, Jane Peterson of Rumford, and Robert Daigle of Mexico, planned the trip with the help of Lewis Irish. A bus was chartered and more than two dozen local residents attended. Some for their first visit ever.
Two winners in ice out contest
May 03, 2013 12:00 amROXBURY -- When Dennis Daniel of Ellis Pond Variety went on vacation on April 15, there were two snowmobilers in the middle of Roxbury Pond. When he returned a week later, the ice was gone.
Daniel said the official time of the ice out at the pond, according to the Game Warden, was 3:29 p.m. on April 22.
That left not one, but two winners, in the sixth annual Rumford Falls Times' Ice Out Contest. Theresa Thomas of Mexico and Odette Carrier of Roxbury not only guessed the correct day, but both had an ice out time of 1 p.m.
INTO THE MUD

Child Advocacy Day Saturday
May 03, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- The Rumford Eagles will hold a Child Advocacy Day and fundraiser for area youth on Saturday.
Promoting and instilling quality community values in our youth is something the Eagles stand behind. Each year, the organization holds a Child Advocacy Day contest. The contest requires that local Aeries/Auxiliaries host an event in their community that teaches area youth safety, protection, prevention and other health and welfare activities.
More cuts requested in proposed RSU 10 budget
May 03, 2013 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- Next Monday, the RSU 10 board is expected to act on recommended cuts that would bring the 2013-14 budget to $36 million.
This meeting was necessary because at the prior week, the board decided they wanted Supt. Tom Ward to find at least another $300,000 to $400,000 in additional cuts to bring the 2013-14 budget to $36 million.
According to recent state valuations, Ward said school taxes in about half of the district’s member towns would increase, while the other half would experience a decrease.

Ward MacDonald & Friends at Skye

Curtain at Skye and Phillips is 7 p.m. A pre-show jam session begins one hour prior to curtain at Skye and Phillips.
