    Remember when Barack Obama was ridiculed by someone last summer for suggesting that Americans properly inflate their tires to save on gas? Well, now that he's president, maybe the head-shakers will take a good tip more seriously. Other reasons to check your tires to make sure they're not low after months of winter driving: Under-inflation compromises handling, braking and tread.

    Growing up in the home of an avid hunter and police officer, my brother, sister and I were always instructed about gun safety and what to do in case of a break in. Although young, we were fairly well-prepared for an emergency situation.

    As the years have gone by and I have continued to become more active in the outdoors and I hear about more home invasions, I thought it would be wise to take a refresher course on firearm safety. I recently found the time to take such a course with Josh White of Western Maine Property Protection out of Norway.

  • New Tractor Supply Co. store in Rumford

    RUMFORD -- River Valley Crossing mall off Route 2 has a new tenant that's expected to open in June in the old Sears and Hannaford store location.

    Construction is under way on a new Tractor Supply Co. store, the company's 17th Maine location, Michael Graham of the company's Media Relations division in Brentwood, Tenn., stated on April 17 in a news report.

  • Commissioners okay casino money loan for 10 new police vehicles

    PARIS -- County commissioners Tuesday approved a plan to finance the purchase of 10 new vehicles for the Oxford County Sheriff's Office with money received by statute from Oxford Casino. The county will repay the money to the casino fund over three years.

    In November, the county budget committee approved up to $275,000 from the county casino fund to finance the purchase of three new sedans and seven new pickup trucks for the Sheriff's Office. Eight older vehicles will be traded in as part of the arrangement.

    On May 16, 2009 the family and friends of Ada (Gammon) Dolloff Vaughn gathered graveside in Buckfield, at the Gammon/Dolloff Family plot to say good-bye. It was a day of remembering how she touched each of our lives.

    “We could stand here for hours and tell stories,” her son Richard Dolloff stated. Several family and friends recounted the days of “stubbornness”, “world re-known whoopie pies” and of course the “tapping on the window to get rid of the crows in the garden.”

  • Rural Employment Network receives Vocational Accreditation

    RUMFORD- Rural Employment Network (REN), an affiliate of Hope Association, was recently awarded a three-year state of Maine vocational accreditation.

    What does this mean for individuals and businesses throughout western Maine?

    REN works with their clients on a fee for service program by training them to go out into the workforce and sustain a position. Clients are referred to REN by case managers, teachers and family members for vocational rehabilitation.

  • Remodeling project at Rite Aid

    RUMFORD -- Employees at Rite Aid are excited about a remodeling project that gets underway this week.

    Asst. Manager Donna Rotford said the Portland Street facility, built in 1997, will undergo changes "to become a wellness store."

    She said the changes will make the store more customer friendly, with new floor coloring leading customers to the pharmacy, as well as the lowering of profiles so people entering the store can see the pharmacy located in back.

  • New location for finish of zip line

    RUMFORD -- Two requests linked to Envision Rumford's Paul Bunyan Lumberjack Festival set for May 4 were approved Thursday by selectmen.

    Jim Rinaldo and Thomas Carey sought permission to do brush and trail work on the town-owned Chisholm Park Trail for the zip line event. The area is where the old bandstand stood.
