Mexico looking to purchase 2002 fire truck
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amMEXICO -- If voters approve, the town will trade two older fire trucks for a newer one, at a net cost of $119,000.
On April 9, the Mexico Board of Selectmen okayed the proposal by Fire Chief Gary Wentzell. With that, an article asking voters to approve a reduction of the Fire Department Reserve fund will be on the town meeting ballot in June.

Tartan Day at Skye
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amSO. CARTHAGE -- New England Celtic Arts will present Maine Ulster-Scotts founder John Mann at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, April 17.
Curtain is at 7 pm. There is a pre-show jam session 45 minutes prior to curtain. Audience members are encouraged to bring their instruments and jam with The Maine Highland Fiddlers for a few minutes.
Town to rent equipment for screening
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amMEXICO -- The town will be renting out equipment to screen loam and gravel over a couple of weeks.
The Board of Selectmen approved the measure, totalling $3,900, during its meeting on April 9.
That action followed researched conducted by Selectman George Byam, who recommended renting out a machine he found at Thompson Equipment in Lewiston. The cost is $3,500, plus $200 each way for delivery.
It had been suggested if it would have possible to share the cost with Rumford, but it was noted that Rumford has a stationary machine at their garage.

Town turns down petition request
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Citing it did not merit the town law-required "critical circumstance, the Board of Selectmen voted 4-0-1 on April 9 on a request calling a special town meeting sought by a tax cap petition.
Selectman Jeremy Volkernick abstained after saying he signed the petition. "Something has to be done for the welfare of this town."
MVHS principal delivers powerful message
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- After a day of dealing with a civil rights issue that went viral on social media, Mountain Valley High School Principal Matt Gilbert called an unscheduled assembly last Wednesday to address all students.
Gilbert began, “One of our themes in PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) is keeping students safe. That includes protecting everyone’s civil rights. When we protect students who need it the most, we’re at our best.”
Healthy hearts in training
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amANDOVER- For the second year of three, the Annual Healthy Hearts 5k will host their youngest participants from the Andover Elementary School. This year’s community event is scheduled for Sunday, May 19.
More than half of the Andover Elementary School students have signed up for the race, along with their parents and siblings, and have been training with a River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition volunteer. They will continue to train weekly until the week before the race.
CUBS GO SEE IT
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amGO SEE IT--As part of the Cub Scouts Go See It requirement for advancement, Local Troop 580 visited the Rumford Falls Times office. Colby Frisbie, Morgan Riddick, Ayden Timberlake and Samuel DeMascio were joined by their moms to tour the building and get an idea of what it’s like to work on a newspaper. Each boy received their own personal front page and even got a sneak peek at the next edition of the paper, which they thought was very exciting. Child Advocacy Day on May 4
Apr 19, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- The Rumford Eagles will hold a Child Advocacy Day and fundraiser for area youth on Saturday, May 4.
Promoting and instilling quality community values in our youth is something the Eagles stand behind. Each year, the organization holds a Child Advocacy Day contest. The contest requires that local Aeries/Auxiliaries host an event in their community that teaches area youth safety, protection, prevention and other health and welfare activities.
