  • Phoenix knock Cougar boys from unbeaten ranks

    JAY -- Dirigo received a dose of their own medicine in a thrilling 46-41 loss to Spruce Mountain in a boys' basketball game played at the Phoenix Dome. A huge crowd of nearly 800 cheered loudly as the Cougars were knocked from the unbeaten ranks.

    Dirigo had won a 57-53 thriller against Spruce Mountain last month at Defoe Gymnasium.

    Snowmobilers in Maine enjoy some of the best sledding around because of the past efforts of The Maine Snowmobile Association (MSA), and local snowmobiling clubs throughout the state. Miles of groomed trail systems allow snowmobilers access to all parts of this gorgeous state, including the Androscoggin River Valley.

    Nowadays, with all of the fine trails available, a weekend of snowmobile riding often covers 500 miles or more. Snowmobilers travel more and ride farther than ever before.

  • Phoenix girls too much for Cougars

    JAY -- The Dirigo girls' basketball team has struggled during the latter half of their season and that trend continued in their Mountain Valley Conference regular-season finale.

    The pressure defense simply proved to be too much once again as Spruce Mountain jumped ahead early against Dirigo in a 61-27 triumph in the Phoenix Dome.

    The Phoenix had led 18-0 and cruised to a 51-32 win against the Cougars Defoe Gymnasium last month.

  • Falcon wrestlers defend regional title

    YORK -- When freshmen Brandon Gill (126 pounds) and Nate Boucher each stepped on the wrestling mat, they realized the circumstances and delivered by winning back-to-back individual championships to lead Mountain Valley 164.5 points to its multiple Class B Western regional championship Saturday over York, who edged out a trio of teams for second place.

  • Cougars win wrestling regional

    BUCKSPORT -- The Dirigo wrestling team achieved their objective, as 194.5 points was good enough for a solid performance to win the Class C West Regional last Saturday.

    Lisbon was third at the event, held at Bucksport High School. Bucksport finished second with 157.5 points, followed by Winslow at 122 and Madison at 100.

  • Allen reaches 1,000 in Falcons' win

    DIXFIELD -- Ayla Allen proved to be center stage as the Mountain Valley standout made history by eclipsing 1,000 career points in a regular season ending girls' basketball game on Feb. 7.

    Allen scored 15 points, Makayla White had 14, Brooke Dolloff with 11 and Chrissy Briggs added 10 in a 52-42 win against Dirigo. A pair of treys by White in the fourth produced a double-digit lead, but Dirigo fought back as Alyssa Wade scored 10 of her 13 points down the stretch.

  • Cougar boys beat Falcons for third time

    DIXFIELD -- A strong start has been a trademark of the Dirigo boys' basketball team throughout the season.

    A foursome of players scored in double figures, led by Cody St. Germain's 17 points and Mitch Stanley, who stepped up on senior night as Dirigo held off Mountain Valley 69-51 in steamy Defoe Gymnasium.

    It was the third time the neighboring rivals have played each other this season. Dirigo had won 58-50 and 55-54 on the Falcons home floor in Rumford.

  • Phoenix pull away from Falcon girls

    RUMFORD -- Things didn’t stay together for the Mountain Valley girls' basketball team and it certainly showed down the stretch.

    Senior Kathyn Ventrella directed the show and scored 19 points, while the Spruce Mountain executed its plan to pull away for a 57-46 triumph against Mountain Valley at Puiia Gymnasium.

    There was a lot on the line between the only Class B teams in the Mountain Valley Conference. Spruce Mountain (14-1) and Mountain Valley (10-6) are ranked third and seventh, respectively.

  • Mistakes down the stretch cost Falcons

    RUMFORD -- If a team remains persistent, good things will eventually come its way. That’s how Mountain Valley feels after having been so close to getting over the hump.

    The Falcons boys' basketball team put forth a strong effort and was within striking distance, but mistakes down the stretch proved to costly in a 60-49 loss to Spruce Mountain.

    The Class B teams certainly were familiar with the styles, after having played each other twice in a span of eight days. The Phoenix receiving a balanced attack in a 53-36 and 48-37 wins against Mountain Valley in Jay.

  • Falcons pull away from St. Doms

    RUMFORD-- The Mountain Valley boys' basketball team proved it had the right stuff in their final regular season home game last Thursday night.

    The Jacob Theriault and Ryan Nicols combined for 31 points and the Falcons picked up the pace in the second half en route to a 59-36 triumph against Saint Doms at Puiia Gymnasium.

    Class B Mountain Valley connected on 12 shots in the game from beyond the arc. Theriault had five Ryan Nicols (three), Scott Nicols (two), with one each by Zack Radcliffe and Milo Jodrey.
