    Mixed Couples League for Jan. 25

    Randy Deroche took the top spot with a three-string total of a 321 with strings of 113, 109 and 99.

    High Singles -- Randy Deroche, 113, 109; Kelly Deroche, 109, 100; Don Hebert, 110; Roger Belanger, 106; Chad Frisbie, 105.

  • Open gymnastics day

    RUMFORD -- There will be an open gymnastics day Saturday morning from 9-10 and 10-11 at the Greater Rumford Community Center.

    The cost is $4 for the class or stay for both for $6. You don't have to be doing gymnastics to join for the day.

    A new session for gymnastics will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 26-April 4, from 4-5 for Level 1 and 5-6 for Level 2. Cost is $60 for the six weeks, but $50 if you've taken gymnastics before. Call 369-9906.

  • Locals ready for state wrestling

    REGION -- There will be a lot on the line when wrestling teams from Mountain Valley and Dirigo perform on the wrestling mats this weekend at its respective state championships.

    Of course these important events have each been delayed an entire week, so it means the individual wrestlers and the teams will have had to remain focused and determined toward striving for the elusive goals.

  • LBI secures lead in MV Rec League

    REGION -- With speed, grace and athleticism, LBI dominated a depleted Bethel Bobcats and all but secured first place with two games remaining in the regular season in the Mountain Valley Rec League.

    Last year's winners showed their championship pedigree with a sound 86-65 victory. Now 9-1, LBI suffered their only loss to the 8-2 Hotel Rumford team, who are now entrenched in second place. Barring an unlikely major upset, both should secure first round byes in the playoffs. Bethel is now 7-3 and looks to finish third and host a first round prelim game.

  • GRCC floor hockey leagues

    RUMFORD -- The Greater Rumford Community Center is taking signups for boys' and girls' field hockey.

    AHL is for grades 1-4 and NHL for grades 5-8. You musy register by Feb. 27 when teams are picked. Even if you played last year, you must register. Anyone interested in coaching, coach 369-9906.

    The league will begin the work of March 11.

    If there is enough interest, there will be a high school floor hockey co-ed league on Thursday evenings beginning on Feb. 28. Cost will be $25 plus membership (free members for Rumford residents; half-price for out of towners).

  • Unbeaten Phoenix down Lady Cougars

    DIXFIELD -- The Dirigo girls' basketball team found out firsthand the importance of being able to start fast because it fell behind and wasn't able to recover in a MVC game.

    The pressure defense simply proved to be too much as Spruce Mountain jumped ahead early and received balanced inside scoring in a 44-28 win against Dirigo at Defoe Gymnasium.

    The Cougars were overwhelmed by the unbeaten Phoenix, who forced three turnovers on the first three possessions of the game and converted them into fastbreak baskets.

  • Free throws help Dirigo to down Spruce

    DIXFIELD --A dose of reality turned into a positive for the Dirigo boys' basketball team.

    The Cougars pulled together to turn up the tempo in the middle quarters as Robbie Babb and Riley Robinson each scored 13 points to break open a double-digit cushion and then had to fend off a charge en route to a 56-49 triumph against Spruce Mountain.

    The Phoenix Nate Hamblin (10 points) and John McKenna each scored in final minute to make it a two possession game.

  • Falcon boys' pull out 61-54 OT win

    RUMFORD -- Adam Volkernick made six free throws in overtime as the Mountain Valley boys' basketball team pulled out a 61-54 win against Mount Abram in Puiia Gymnasium.

    Jake Theriault (29 points) had forced the extra session by sinking two free throws with seconds left in regulation. Ryan Nicols added 10 points.

    Mountain Valley had struggled to its groove in front of the Roadrunners' zone defense.
