  • Free throws help Dirigo to down Spruce

    DIXFIELD --A dose of reality turned into a positive for the Dirigo boys' basketball team.

    The Cougars pulled together to turn up the tempo in the middle quarters as Robbie Babb and Riley Robinson each scored 13 points to break open a double-digit cushion and then had to fend off a charge en route to a 56-49 triumph against Spruce Mountain.

    The Phoenix Nate Hamblin (10 points) and John McKenna each scored in final minute to make it a two possession game.

  • Falcon boys' pull out 61-54 OT win

    RUMFORD -- Adam Volkernick made six free throws in overtime as the Mountain Valley boys' basketball team pulled out a 61-54 win against Mount Abram in Puiia Gymnasium.

    Jake Theriault (29 points) had forced the extra session by sinking two free throws with seconds left in regulation. Ryan Nicols added 10 points.

    Mountain Valley had struggled to its groove in front of the Roadrunners' zone defense.

  • Falcon wrestling fourth in regional

    YORK -- When Dakota Jacques stepped on the wrestling mat, he had a plan, although a diversion was necessary before the mission was accomplished in the 132-pound championship match.

    Fryeburg brothers Connor (113) and Zach Sheehan won back-to-back individual championships to lead the Raiders (176.5 points) to the Class B Western regional championship Saturday over Wells at 153. Fryeburg proved to be the class of the field, however it was competitive. Wells had pulled to within six points, but the Raiders won five consolation semifinal matches by pin for 35 team points.

  • Dirigo repeats as Mid-State champs

    RUMFORD -- Nelson Pepin and the Dirigo wrestling team scored 168 points to repeat as Mid-State League champions Saturday over bridesmaid Fryeburg Academy at 143.

    Dirigo champions were Griffyn Smith (106 pounds), Thomas Barnett (160) and Pepin (182).

    "It was a good day,” said Barnett, who was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler after pinning Teddy Durfee of Wells in the finals. “Everyone wrestled up to their seeds. I feel the team is beginning to peak. The kids are keeping their noses clean and are coming to practices.”

  • LBI leads rec league

    MEXICO -- In Mountain Valley Rec Basketball League play, last year's champion Laid Back Installers gained an advantage in the battle for first place, as Hotel Rumford wore out the Bethel Bobcats.

    LBI (8-1) won by forfeit against The Thundercats (0-9) and took a one-game lead over Hotel Rumford and Bethel, who are both 7-2.

    The John Roderick Ski Marathon will take place on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Black Mountain.

  • Lady Cougars take see-saw contest

    DIXFIELD -- The Dirigo girls' basketball team maintained its composure down the stretch behind big shots by Lauren Henderson and Jessica Conant in a 44-39 triumph against Mount Abram. The game was tied or changed sides nine times in the fourth quarter at Defoe Gymnasium.

    It was the Roadrunners who had come alive to erase a double-digit deficit and regained the lead on a Tori Beane three pointer and a basket by Mikayla Luce with just over one minute left to play. A pair of free throws by Conant (13 points) provided the eventual winning points with 57.4 seconds left to play.
