Austin wins mixed martial arts match
Nov 30, 2012 12:00 amRUMFORD -- When Eric Austin bided his time before striking and it paid off in a mixed martial arts match recently at Fight Night V.
The Rumford native remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision in going the distance against Steve Sabel of Ellsworth before 2,300 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston. It was Austin's second venture into the raised cage, having made his debut at the Colisee in September.
Danylik is new Falcon boys' hoop coach
Nov 30, 2012 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Tom Danylik has learned that it requires a concretive effort by everyone involved in order for a team to achieve success and that's the message he'll instill as the new boys' basketball coach at Mountain Valley High School.
It will be the first varsity position for Danylik, who is well prepared for the challenge. He was approved by the RSU 10 school board prior to starting preseason practices on Nov. 19.
Danylik coached the JV girls' hoop team last year and the experience helped reinforce what he believes will benefit the student-athletes and himself.
Walton joins GRCC
Nov 30, 2012 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Dawson Walton has now joined the Greater Rumford Community Center, where he will offer personal training to members, as well as conditioning classes.
Walton, who said he has 10 years experience with personal training, had been the manager for several years with Generations in Mexico.
He said he'll do personal training with GRCC members from middle school through senior citizens. Walton said they will develop individualized plans and goals and then push those people towards reaching those results.
Three Falcons on football all-star squad
Nov 23, 2012 12:00 amRUMFORD -- There were countless trying times throughout the season for the Mountain Valley football team. However, much to its credit, there wasn't any lapses in striving toward what needed to be accomplished.
Along the way, players Jake Theriault, Colin Merrill and Ryan Nicols each stood out to be recognized by the rest of the Campbell Conference at the annual banquet. The trio were each captains and stood out on both sides of the ball.
Four Cougars on football all-star squad
Nov 23, 2012 12:00 amDIXFIELD -- The ability to adapt to different situations served the Dirigo football team well throughout the season and four student-athletes were selected to the Campbell Conference All Star team.
The seniors included Spencer Trenoweth, running back; Thomas Barnett, linebacker; and defensive ends Nelson Pepin and Zack White. The foursome was recognized during the annual banquet recently.River Valley Outdoors
Nov 23, 2012 12:00 amIn the past, I reloaded ammunition to save money and fine tune my big game loads. Tolerances, in those days, must have been less and my hand-loaded ammunition always outperformed the regular brand-named ammo companies.
Today’s ammunition manufacturers produce quality ammo that easily surpasses any reloading effort on my part. The only reason for me to reload ammo anymore would be to save a few dollars. Putting the components together does save money, and it doesn’t take very long to put a box or two of your favorite cartridges together.

Nov 23, 2012 12:00 amMEXICO -- For the 2012 edition of the Mountain Valley middle school football team, it proved to be an interesting start because the Hawks had been left without a league or a schedule because during the summer, several of the teams who had been members changed leagues.
"They didn't bother to inform us,'' said coach Gary Dolloff. ''So we had to scramble for a schedule and our new A.D at the middle school Cheryl Sevigny needed to get right to work. She did a great job we played a very good schedule.''

The common theme surrounding the Dirigo landscape was "let's work and see how things progress." So the degree of expectations had been toned down as the team went through its drills. Although the initial concerns contradicted the end results.
