May 03, 2013 12:00 amNicole Burgess scored three goals in her first-ever Mountain Valley lacrosse game. The hat trick highlighted the 18-3 season-opening loss to Gardiner. But it is no surprise to see Burgess flourish in athletic competition.
The senior led the field hockey team in goals scored last fall. She has also placed fourth multiple times in the Class B state wrestling meet, at 106 and 113 pounds.
Speaking of lacrosse, how about former Falcon Ayla Allen, who is currently performing at the University of Maine at Farmington.

During the Wednesday Night Knock Out Tournament, Jamie Volkernick edges out his father, John Volkernick Sr. by 105 to 100.
Round One -- John Volkernick Sr. knocked out John Kidder, 104 to 92; Ryan Palmer knocked out Marcus Palmer, 104 to 99; Jamie Volkernick knocked out Mark Palmer, 124 to 91.

In today’s column I’d like to briefly list a few pointers that seem to get lost amidst the high-tech chatter often associated with fly fishing. Far too many well-intended folks, while attempting to teach others how to fly fish, fill a new angler with so much information that they often lose some of the more subtle points of instruction.

Falcons boys' track team preview
Apr 26, 2013 12:00 amRUMFORD -- Seeing double may be exactly what is needed for the Mountain Valley boys' track team because it has the numbers available that is necessary to be competitive.
The Falcons have smaller available students and like other schools in the Mountain Valley Conference, have the student-athletes competing in two or more events. This has reduced team members from specializing in one event.

There have been some lean years this dedcade and that certainly hasn't been what the Falcons have been accustomed to having in prrevious seasons. However, long time coach Steve LaPointe firmly belives the current personnel have the necessary skills that can turn things around. The higher expectations is a step in the right direction.

The Falcons are going through a bit of transition with some new personnel, so the preseason is being used to evaluate the individual skills. This will determine where the players end up on the ladder. The absence of a couple students who are dealing with issues, have opened up the competition.
