  • Maine Amateur Wrestling to HOF to induct Gilbert

DIXFIELD --There is not much that Doug Gilbert hasn't experienced in wrestling. Even after five decades, a burning desire still fuels the fire because every match has the potential for future success.

Gilbert, the current Dirigo coach, has truly gained respect through out the wrestling community and those efforts and sacrifices haven't gone unnoticed. He will be inducted in the Maine Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame this summer. He will be joined by Dr. Tom Ward, Maynard Pelletier, Jon Kane and Rusty Smith.

  • Dirigo baseball team preview

DIXFIELD -- Over the past few seasons, the level of expectations have been extremely high surrounding the Dirigo baseball team and this spring will be no exception because there is plenty to go around. Exactly how far the Cougars will be able to go lies directly in the players abilities to execute.
Still, the program has developed a winning tradition, but at the same time, the players realize that nothing can be taken for granted. Last spring, the Cougars  lost the first game of the season to St. Doms and then won 19 straight, including the state championship.

  • Wrestling success through the years

RUMFORD -- Although the names changed from Stephens to Rumford High School, the wrestling program achieved monumental success and the span between 1967-81, the maroon and white (finished first or second 11 times in 14 years) proved to be a force on both the state and national levels.

There was no mistaking who was in complete charge- coach Jerry Perkins, however, the main constant has been that the student-athletes have all come from the same blue-collar, mill-town area nestled in the mountains of western Maine.
